I just want to make sure the Powerbook (for now the 15" 1.67ghz) can do all this with out much trouble.

Hello Spaceboy  (excellent song/better artist)

i KNOW the 15" will be fine for you. BUT. final cut will be coreImage capable if it isnt already and if you want your rendering of effects to be "LIVE" :D then i would spend that load of cash on a PM. the better GPU the more impressed you will be. you can by a low end GPU and replace it with the best the market has to offer or just build your PM on the apple web site with their pro GPU offerings.

i got powerbook thinking it would be nice to spend time computing away from a set work area but i have to say i miss the power. PBs are fast but your paying for portability and losing power. i would say go for the G5 PM cause it really kicks booty over the G4. the G5 has a FASTER BUS (important), more ram capability, faster drives, upgradability and you can switch out that GPU when it becomes long in the tooth. G5 PM all the way. maybe even the new iMac 20", i hear it has a better GPU now.

i know i know, with what you said you'll be using it for, the powerbook would be MORE than sufficient...easily. im just on a power kick. i want POWER POWER POWER with my next system. i cant wait to get the PM.

I am not naive to think that there will never be virus or spyware worries for Mac users. The larger Apples market share gets, the more reason some hacker has to attempt something against the Mac OS.

this is very true. but the big difference is...would you rather leave APPLE to find a way to deal with the onslaught of viruses or are you happy with WINDOWS attempt to sort this issue?

to me it seems that apples philosophies are much more promising. they seem to care about their product. its almost like a craft to them. where as windows...well, windows seems like a product manufactured by drones that dont really take pride in their work...or maybe just overwhelmed. who knows.

I am content to let Apple figure out any issues related to virus problems. One of the reasons that I ordered my first Mac last week was due to the crap that I have had to put up with on my Windows box. I am finally fed up with it after 17 years. Unfortunately, I will still have to use one at work. :(

You still need to configure and activate the firewall.

Ta! Will do that straight away. Ive got a hardware firewall on my home network aswell, so the more the merrier!

Think one of the first things I'll do is use spotlight on the preferences panel and work out where everything is!!

Slashdot had an article on someone offering $50,000 for the first Mac virus to be created, then handed over to an antivirus company. Still waiting for that first one to come out....
