How can i do it

If you go to a video file in finder, right mouse and click open with. Select VLC and then tick the box for always open with. This should make it the default application for the file format you select.

stridemat, i am familiar with the way you just described but like i said i dont want to do this for each video format i open, i want vlc to be the default for all video formats (avi,mkv,mp4 etc) by selecting one option and not doing the procedure for each video and audio file format.

Sorry about that, I didn't read it right.

ctrl-click the file -> Get Info -> Open with: VLC -> Change All..

Or, right click one of the files, Get Info, then click Open With... and select your program and hit Use this Program to Open All Files of This Type.

No, there isn't. How many video formats do you actually use? I can think of maybe seven that are in common usage, is it really that much of a pain to change them all seven times?
