Something has got into my system in the last few weeks. When I open a page in Chrome or Safari certain random words on the page are underlined and in blue font. If you cursor over them, an ad icon lights up. If you click, thinking it is a link in the article, it takes you to an ad. As well, frequently when I open a new page another page pops up requesting me to take a survey.
How to I find the problem and eliminate?

First, use Adware Medic to scan and remove adware.

Second, use a good adblocker (I use AdBlock, from http://getadblock.com ), which does a better job than ABP in my experience.

Third, this should be posted in the OS X subforum, as this is a software problem and not a hardware problem.

While that looks like malware to you and me, I think it's an ad service that websites subscribe to, and include in the web pages they send to you. As others have said, it can be blocked.

Could be, but from OP's wording it sounds like not just one site this is happening on.
