OK, well we went to the bank today but found out I'm too young to have my own checking account, so my mom just opened an account and let me use it. We have like five sample checks but I will never use them because I need to use my mom's signature. I deposited $200 into the account but I have to wait 7-10 days for the debit card to arrive. Uhhgg. Anyway, thanks everyone for all of your tips. I'll be sure to be careful with my money once I get the card.

is the debit card going to have your name on it? in theory you can't sign the receipts ...

Er, umm... isn't that rather the point, to teach you how to balance an account?

Nothing like having to transcribe 50 $3.00 purchases from Starbucks to make one realize that spending habits may need changing...

I agree. Maybe you should also check out www.daveramsey.com

I just got it today and it has my mom's name on it. In the paperwork it says with places that accept debit card, I can just enter the PIN number that I set but I can also use the card at any place that accepts VISA or MasterCard, but then I have to sign for it. So I can't really sign with my mom's name, so I guess I will be limited to places that accept debit.
