I'm looking for a good (hopefully free or very cheap) mandarin chinese app. I'd like to be able to learn to speak and write.

This obviously would be to supplement learning, not a sole resource. I don't expect an iphone app to be able to teach me everything!

Any recommendations?

Check out DianHua: http://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewSoftware?id=288580473&mt=8

It is advertised as a Chinese-English dictionary but is so much more. It lets you bookmark words which you can then view as flashcards to study and review. You can practice writing the characters on the touchscreen and I believe the paid version includes pronunciation of many words. Includes Simplified and Traditional characters and search by English, Pinyin and character.

I've been using it for a least a year to practice Chinese and for translation help when traveling.

Wow, I really wasn't expecting a response. Seemed like a pretty specific request, so thanks! Downloading it now,
