manual backup Time Machine not possible?

Hi, for some time now I'm making manual backups using Time Machine, or at least I thought I did.

I wanted to retrieve a lost file and opened Time Machine, only to see I have only 2 backups, one dating 3rd January 2009 and one Now, which I just made before.

So is it not possible to make manual backups, like once a month? Cause it seems that it always overwrites the Now backup, although I have enough USB HD space...could someone shed some light on this please??
