Since the macro mode works by switching to the UltraWide lens when a close distance is detected by the lidar sensor, why can’t the 13 and 13 mini also take macro shots by manually switching to UltraWide, and then cropping the image?

They have a very similar UltraWide lens, or am I missing something?

Macro mode is maybe now the only thing stopping me from switching from the 13 Pro to 13 mini (my heart wants the mini)

You can try the halide app, however although very good it’s still not the same as an actual dedicated lens.

The pro models have autofocus on the lens whereas the mini and regular 13 don’t, which is why they can’t do it, that and Apple wouldn’t allow a new feature on anything but the Pro.

There isn’t a dedicated macro lens. The Pro models are just cropping an ultra wide image.

I know, but the telephoto is a lot closer to a macro focal length than a wide or an ultra wide is. That’s what I meant with the dedicated lens, just a zoomed in focal length which the regular models don’t have at all.
What does the telephoto have to do with anything? The macro mode is cropping the ultra wide lens which the regular 13 models have. That is the exact point of the OP.

To be fair to RCC it is intuitive to expect the 'zoomed' lens to be the macro lens because it 'gets closer' to the subject.

I think I'm just looking for stronger reasons to downgrade my 13 Pro to mini as I miss the small size but I'd also miss the Pro features...

As someone who now has the 13 mini I can whole heartedly recommend it. Just be 100% sure you won’t miss the screen and camera features. The rest is superb!
