Is this possible? Is there a setting to enable manual orientation (landscape/vertical). Sometimes when you're laying down on a couch or something it changes orientation, when it's inconvenient.

Maybe a third party app if it's not in standard settings.

By the way, I won't have my iPad until tomorrow when it's released her in Denmark, so haven't fiddled around with settings yet.

There is a slide switch on the edge of the device that will LOCK the screen to that existing orientation.

If you Google the iPad 3 manual you will have a lot of good info to read till your new toy arrives tomorrow.

Enjoy!

There is a lock button that you can set to lock screen orientation or mute the iPad. It's located next to the volume control:)

I can't remember if that switch defaults to mute or rotation lock. You can pick which it does in settings and the other function will be available as a button in the app switcher, next to the media buttons.

It defaults to mute. You can change it in Settings>General

You can also double tap the home button to bring up multitasking. Slide to the right. There is an orientation lock icon next to the iPod controls.
