Did anyone actually read the article? It's just a prototype. A PROTOTYPE!

Prototype (noun): an original model on which something is patterned.

In other words, a proof of concept, a demo that's inexpensive to make, a base model on which something more consumer-friendly can be built. NOT something that they actually plan on selling.

Geez, I know we all like Apple products, but sometimes it feels like everyone here reactively attacks anything without the Apple logo...

I dont think Apple's interested in this! Its a strange hybrid product that tries to keep its feet in two boats but drowns! Its performance is sub-par and its TDP and power consumption is far too high!

Seeing the size of this device in someone's hands like this makes me feel that even if designed by Apple, it would not be popular. It's an awkward size to carry around. Since it is too large to fit in a pocket, one might as well bring a MacBook.

"I ain't got time to read" (spits tobacco out of mouth)

hello. ive beem visiting this site for a while without regirstering, but this thread made me want to based on the fact that over a week or so i have been desgining a mac tablet!
i have lots of mockups of ideas, like, touch keyboards or hard keyoards, flat face "screen only" desgin, standard tablet design (laptop with touch screen that folds down), and user interfaces. names like mactouch, mactouch pro, itouch (sounds to much like ipt though). so yes, glad to see others have thought about it to. we all know that with touchscreens like iphones or ipt, a mac tablet would be kick***.

i look forward to having fun on this forum!

Here's my take:

If you can't carry it in your pocket, and must carry it in a bag/case whatever, then what advantages does this have over a laptop with a real keyboard? I mean I love my iphone, but the "touch" form factor isn't made for long emails, word processing, etc. What can this thing do that my iphone can't theoretically do? Tablets just seem to be one of those technologies like laser-disc...a good idea...but kind of something that is just skipped over because a better technology came along so rapidly after....

Does anyone have a clue how much power the Atom-processor uses compared to the Intel PXA270 (@624MHz)?

If favourable or close, methinks one could make some pretty nifty PDA's (crossing fingers).

How about a 13" version with a detatchable keyboard? That would have the ability to be a slow Macbook, or take off the keyboard if you don't plan on typing much (surfing, playing music). If you think it's stupid that someone would pay money for something to surf and play music, think again. Unfortunately, many of us already own a laptop and would have a hard time justifying it, but then again, my once cluttered entertainment system, has trimmed down to a reciever (which is now really just a power amplifier as I stream even local radio) and the following accesories:

Apple TV with HD monitor (no actual terrestrial tuner)
a Macbook with an Airport Epress hooked up to the reciever

That's it. Fact of the matter is that I'm not going back. DVD, CD, cassette, 8 track, phono, radio are all obsolete. That said, I will eventually want something without a keyboard to play my media and I don't always leave a 47" TV on so I can play AppleTV.
