    So I'm on 3g, 3.0, tmobile.

I do NOT have the t-mobile data plan. I can surf the net only when I am connected via Wi-fi

I get the E (edge) sign, but it doesn't do anything for me.

However, I have noticed that the google map app picks up my location wherever I am - regardless of wi-fi access. Also, if I am at home and look up an address through wi-fi - then start driving - the dot follows my location and moves with me -- even though I'm not on any data plan.

    How is this?

Does it update the maps while you're away from WiFi?

Thats my question as well. I can see it moving the blue dot because of the GPS, but not update the streaming maps.

Just the blue dot. Does not update maps.

But how would GPS work if I'm not connected?

Is there a way to use EDGE without being on the T-mob data plan?

    GPS doesn't use cellular data.
