Is the data for the new Apple maps saved locally (partially or completely) or does it require data?

I ask as it would probably influence the performance of turn by turn navigation. I currently use co-pilot live and since the app uses local data, going through a bad reception area isn't a problem.

How do the new maps work with regards to network coverage?

As of beta 3 it seems to be working like this.
Nothing is stored locally until after you search.
Then it caches some of the info temporarily.
If you plan a route and stick to it, the route will be cached in it's entirety but the maps are downloaded and cached on the fly.
If you lose data while sticking to your route you'll still get the turn by turn (provided you have GPS signal) and you'll still get the route line to follow but the background maps may disappear until data is restored.
Go off-route far enough that it needs to recalculate and you'll need to have a data connection.
