I don't know how Apple makes money off Maps, but I think it would be nice if they opened Maps API for free for everyone to use than to rely on Google.

What does Apple get out of it? Well, I am not sure what they make out of it now but it could be a publicity stunt and free advertisement you know like the Kodak Theater

Will take years until they even get even with google maps if living outside US, apples services is way behind in europe atleast. Still dont even have apple news here yet or fitness+ even everyone know english, so its not needed translate everything before releasing..

I have a weird dependency on Waze. I really want to like Apple Maps especially now that I have CarPlay. Maybe this will help me make the transition

Those renderings are very nice. Detailed and realistic but without the noise of just being a photo.

Unfortunately Apple’s track record suggests that 3 years from now the list of supported cities will barely extend past the famous few they always use in PR.

Look Around is just taking panoramas with a GPS signal. Barely any effort required and Apple still can’t be bothered for most places. No chance they create these bespoke 3D buildings for a meaningful number of cities.

Agreed! They like to WOW us with sneak peaks of things to come but we still aren’t seeing look around available for most cities. San Fran and NYC mean squat to me. I’ve been able to see detailed views of those places for years on google. Apple will get my attention when I can virtually walk down main street Gravel Switch, KY or Dead Horse, Alaska. Until then, big whoop!

The population of dead horse alaska is 25, so if you can’t see why NY is higher up on the priority list for Apple I don’t know what to tell you.

^^^This. I also try to avoid Google as much as possible. But Google Maps is the only reliable service in Germany. Apple maps has way to less information.

Edit: It is a doom loop. Apple‘s market share here is somewhere between 10 or 20%, Germany runs on Android. It is understandable that Apple thinks, hey, we invest in markets where we are stronger. Alas, that won‘t help to increase market share...

Edit no. 2: Tim Cook has hailed EU data protection, recently. Maybe Apple could start an EU marketing initiative. First step would be to compete with Google Maps. Second one, to compete with Spotify. (This is a dream, they won‘t do.)

Most of Europe runs on Android. Which is weird if you think about it as we are far more privacy focused. But Apple has created this problem due to high prices, limited availability and support (lots of regions don’t have Apple Stores), the lack of an international focus of Apple to integrate with local markets and obviously, very limited marketing over here.

Google Maps and especially Waze the gold standard here. Nobody touches Apple Maps. I do wonder why Apple didn’t purchase Waze.

I can see this being very useful on a large iPad if one has a co-pilot. When I am driving this Mac feature does me no good as I get haptic feedback on my watch. I can't be distracted looking at a map as I drive.

If Apple Maps wasn't so US-centric I'd have made the switch from Google Maps already. I love the integration with my Apple devices and these new features (and the ones from past years) are very useful. Hopefully they rethink their current rollout approach.

I'll be interested to see the APIs and how much this globe could compete with Google Earth. Will it take kml files? Any support for plotting lines in 3D (i.e. giving objects an altitude component)? What about animations and tours?

Same here. Don't remember exactly when. Probably 2012?

ok question for anyone with the developer beta who is willing to answer...

we have seen the hyper detailed new 3d maps that seem limited to a handful of cities right now. we seperately have seen increased detail DRIVING MAPS showing 3D interchanges and a slightly changed perspective... are those nationwide in the USA or again are those just those new cities? i heard carplay will NOT support the new driving maps at io15 launch but later this year, i'm just wondering if its anything worth looking forward to if i'm not in one of the listed cities. thanks!

Looks to me like the new driving direction stuff is only in the same cities with the new 3d maps, at least based on what I’m seeing.

Ever since they started displaying so many green areas on the maps they have become very difficult to read. We should be able to toggle vegetation on or off. I prefer it off so I can see the roads and text better. Also, there is now so much green that I can no longer quickly locate parks! Parks used to stand out, but now they blend in.
We can toggle the green areas on or off. It’s called “climate change view”.

Sorry but you're wrong on the track record.

USA cities first, yet before all of them got the last update, UK was next, then a few others and Canada showed up about a year later (major cities).

I'm super Glad Forstall had the vision - to ween us off of Google Maps and only finally with internal UI and real team dediated to this - because Cook felt an apology was needed when HE didn't implement an internal team originally - look how LONG it took to get Maps better AFTER ousting Forstall - sorry he's NOT to blame. Apple relying entirely off of a third party source for Maps was asinine from the get go.

This is now looking as good as Nokia Maps did back in their S60 Symbian heyday - detailed, and clean UI. Now I just need breadcrumbs - and ability to have family sharing. THAT functionality ALONE would be a HUGE HUGE good implementation for a child kidnapped wearing a Watch SE or that has an AirTag.

I imagine there’s a good story there, where apple felt like sticking with google for even another year was untenable. Something google demanded, perhaps.

Makes you wonder with all the jazz with the Eoic case about Apple competing and locking out competitors why Maps vs Google Maps was not mentioned at all? Both still compete amongst a lot of other 3rd party map apps. Oh well done is done.

One of these days, I'll update my my 2017 iMac, it's still on Mojave.

- Feeling of "why fix it if it ain't broke" 🤷🏻‍♂️
- And I would love to....but I honestly don't know how some of my very well running apps will work on the new OS.

Honestly, does anyone outside the US (yes, those people exist), actually use Apple Maps instead of Google Maps? I'd love to know. In Canada, Apple Maps is *****. Half the businesses I've tried to search for, don't even show up in the listing. Half the features don't work. What's the point? I mean, if you're just trying to please the US consumers, knock yourself out. The satellite and street views in Canada are at least 5 years old and the resolution is woeful.
I have found that which app I use in Canada really depends on where you live. For example, I used to live in Thunder Bay and exclusively chose Google Maps because they have offline maps. Large sections of the Trans Canada near Thunder Bay are without any cell phone coverage whatsoever.

However, since moving to Toronto last month, I’ve switched to Apple Maps since it shows and gives directions using traffic lights and stop signs. I’ve found this to be MUCH easier to follow in the busy city.
