Instead of the locator going UP on the screen. It's going DOWN and when it tells me to turn left, the line is going right. The whole thing is backwards. Is there anyway to flip it around?

That's because you're going South. Do you have the 3G or the 3GS?

If you are on your GS you can hit the button on the bottom left that makes the map follow your location. If you hit it a second time it uses the compass to set the orientation.

That's correct...I was going South, but all my other GPS apps still have me going UP on the screen regardless of the direction.

    I have a 3GS

In that image, I had just gotten off the freeway onto exit ramp. At light, if I was looking at the image, I needed to turn right, but if I read the words, which I hardly do when driving, I needed to turn LEFT. Often times I dont even switch from page 1 of 4. I just hit the button at bottom left and follow the cursor that represents me, using the highlighted line.

Push the location button twice (not once)

Maps isn't like that. You'll just have to pay attention to which direction you're traveling. I actually prefer that view and I use it on my Tom Tom as well. I like to know which direction I'm heading. I realize though that this view confuses the hell out of most people because they see a right turn but it's actually left, but it doesn't bother me.

Um, no? Just because it wasn't oriented so that forward was up doesn't mean it was telling you to turn right.. That's how maps work.

As others said, you can use the location button to orient the map to the direction you're facing. Still, it's Google Maps, NOT Google Maps Navigation...

'Maps' is not a Sat-Nav app - it is a Map app.

Map books are printed with North at the top and South at the bottom*. This is how 'Maps' works so it makes sense.

Sat-Nav apps are showing you the way to go, that is why you are always going up the screen.

    * yes I do know you can buy "upside down" maps but they are mostly North to South.

It very well does. Look at the image. The highlighted line goes to the right. The words at the top say turn left. If I were just following the line, I would have turned right at that light.

    Makes sense and thanks

I will try this next time. Thanks

My TomTom has me going up at all times and left is pictured left, so on and so fourth. Although, Wolf explained why.

Just remember that if you're traveling south, left and right turns are reversed. Or if you're traveling east, left is up and right is down. Or if you're traveling west, the opposite.

    It's like a paper map.

I realize that now. However, there are times I am not sure what direction I am headed and I use that highlighted line to get me where I want to be. I know what to do now......Use TomTom....lol

Looks like you have 2 choices. Obtain the very minimum in map reading skills or next time turn right and get lost.

But if you had turned right at that light the dot in the map representing you would have turned the other way.

If you want the map orientation to always be according to the direction you're facing you have to press the location button twice.

It's relative. You could hold your phone sideways and should still know that the line goes to the left with relation to the dot. If not, you need some practice reading maps.

Maps.app is not a navigation app. You're not supposed to use it for turn-by-turn directions while driving.

Also, about the Tom Tom, it's a setting that I chose to make North always at the top of the screen. It doesn't matter if your Tom Tom is set differently. I purposely set mine so that north is at the top. The Tom Tom is 100x better than Maps.app anyway because there's a clear image of an arrow with the direction I'm supposed to turn at.

Facepalm Before the image tells you to turn 'right' it's telling you to drive 'down'. How did that work out for you?
