Ext HDD visible on Finder...but that's it...

DISCLAIMER: I've searched the forum looking for similar problem, but haven't found it.

My issue is that I connect my LaCie 500 GB drive to AEBS and it shows up in Finder. When I click on it in Finder, nothing happens. When I try to configure TM to select a drive, nothing shows up in the list box.

Any ideas or suggestions are welcome...thanks!!

Try not hooking your external up through your AEBS but directly to your computer. Then locate it via Finder. Then launch Time Machine and see if it shows up. If it does, run a backup. When it's done, which will take a very long time, hook your external back up to your AEBS and see if Time Machine backs up to your external wirelessly.

Worked for me over the weekend.

Thanks for the feedback. Unfortunately it did not work. I can see the name of the AEBS in finder (under Shared), however, if i click on it...nothing happens. And again, when i try to configure TM, nothing shows up in the list box.

(help!)

Same problem

My Western Digital mybook is connected to my Aebs and and I can read and write to it through finder by clicking on the AEBS. When I go to TM The HD is not on the list.

I think I may have figured it out

OK so after about an hour on the phone with Apple today. The guy told me that in OSX Lepoard that you don't need Airdisk Utility and to go ahead and delete it. I did so restarted my computer and the Time Machine worked off my airdisk. !YaY! That is the only change that I did. Any more questions just ask. Good luck

Sounds promising.... how does one delete an Airdisk Utility?...

Thanks.

Drag and drop the airdisk utiliy icon to the trash can.

Man, i hate to be a pain, but there is no "Airdisk Utility" on my MBP2. I have an "Airport Utiity" that is used to administer AE....but that's it. I did a search on "Airdisk" (using Spotlight and Help), but there is no reference to "Airdisk".... and I don't think I want to delete the Airport Utility...right?

Thanks again.

Guys, just a heads up that the the AEBS + Time Machine setup isn't officially supported:

https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/467574/

My setup with AEBS + MyBook Home Edition works great with TM...but I'm considering whether or not to just return this setup in case Apple decides in their ultimate wisdom to disable it next update...

Also, a tip for those experiencing disconnections during a long back-up ...try setting your AEBS broadcast channel at a specific number (Channel 8 works for me) instead of automatic. If you continue to experience disconnections, try a different channel.

Tips how I set up TM & AEBS Gigabit & Ext HDD

Hey folks,

I have been struggling with my two external hdd (one a WD myBook - 250g, and one Seagate 500g 5400rpm in an enclosure that has extra USB ports for daisy chaining disks or peripherals like printers).

IMHO, the Airport seems to be unstable and seems to be slow to mount and read the disks. During my first attempts to backup over Airdisk, the signal would drop out during read/write and corrupt my disk! I eventually changed the wireless settings to 5ghz with wide channels. I don't lose my signal at all now, but this does shorten the AEBS range significantly. I am only getting 38% in my home office at range of about 30 feet (plaster walls seem to degrade the signal more than drywall).

The initial back up of my 250g MB took about 30 hrs over air!

I spent 3 days troubleshooting and finding what I think are a few important points that have not been mentioned often here - at least that I can find, so apologies if this appears elsewhere.

So...
A. Set up your TM parse file via USB BEFORE connecting to the AEBS the first time. You don't need to do a full backup over direct USB, but it would be faster, before moving to the AEBS.

B. For the TM HDD, the drive can NOT be partitioned. I tried and I could only get TM to recognize the HDD when it was NOT partitioned. When it was partitioned, it showed up in finder as a drive, but not in TM as a drive. It did show up in TM as a drive when it was not partitioned.

C. As mentioned frequently elsewhere here, you need to mount the drive in Finder before TM will see it, so set up your Account preferences to mount the drive at startup.

Finally, I've just set up the external drives connected to the AEBS for WAN access over internet using disk password. I have yet to test it, but am looking forward to it.

Does anyone have any tips for me on this? Thanks in advance.
