I don't know whether to get an S7 or wait for the S8? I want to get into fitness, but I don't want to spend my money on something that'll be improved in a couple of months.

Usually I‘d say get it now as the Watch is a pretty mature product, but this year I‘d actually wait myself as we may for the first time get a second separate Watch line (the “rugged“ one) which may be very interesting, especially if you mainly care for the fitness aspect.

Thank you. I'll wait in that case. At least I'll have a chance to save up some spare money for it. I hope they keep the Product Red version as that colour scheme looks awesome.

The other concern I have is price increases. You *know* that rugged edition will be more expensive than the base. I also wonder if they are going to do something similar to MBA and keep the 7 and bump the price for the 8.

I agree with others. I really just don’t think processing speed is even remotely an issue. There’s no need to get faster. More efficiency would be great, but I don’t think they’d be able to get a big change in battery life.

My guess is that they’re going to release the rumored low-power mode and say that they tweaked the SOC for the Series 8 for it (I.e., you can’t use it on any other series watch).

I’m interested to see what the rugged model might be. I don’t at all agree with the mock-ups that look like a G-Shock. That design is massively un-Apple. I can’t see them ever going for that.

longer battery life would be amazing. Though I f it’s the same processor on the same node architecture I’m not sure there is much they can do, aside from software, but then they could apply that backwards too.

But hopefully I’m wrong and we see some substantial improvement there.

I really don’t see the point of a rugged version. If you want that go Garmin. Apple is about sleek tech, my S5 steel is remarkably robust and looks great still and I am hard on my watches. I also prefer the shape I don’t want a round Apple Watch.

I am guessing the alleged rugged version will come with a beefed up band and outer case (sorta like Otterbox).

This version would also be an excuse to make it larger and heavier which would allow for a much larger battery. Long distance runners or triathletes today cannot really use the Apple Watch due to the battery life being too short.

I don't think technology is there for any dramatic battery life increase.

Do we think Apple would ever use a memory-in-pixel (MIP) display to achieve greater battery times?

Admittedly it’s not the Apple playbook as it’s a lower quality resolution and brightness. But in some ways it’s ideal for the intended use. Do you need millions of colours for outdoor activities?

The thing about SoCs is that they contain more than CPU cores. So it's entirely possible to go from S6 to S8 with the same CPU core design and still add other functionality to the SoC. Arguably, conventional CPU cores are nowhere near as important in a Watch as the specialty processors that are used for interpreting sensor data. If I want to compute a spreadsheet I won't be using my Watch.

I just think that processor is fine for now. Please focus on the watch uptime by improving the battery.

I've gotten used to charging my AW5 every night before going to bed. But will greatly appreciate if the time between charge may be greatly improved in the new AW.

I hope we will see this some day. Similar to motion co-processor in iPhone. Could save some battery life.

Yeah, processor speed is fine right now. Still, I keep wondering what the „tentpole“ feature of Series 8 is going to be. Rumours are very sparse …

S0: new shiny Apple gadget
S2: much faster (i.e. useable)
S3: cellular
S4: bigger screen (smaller bezels) + ECG
S5: always-on screen
S6: blood oxygen sensor
S7: bigger screen (smaller bezels) + fast charging
S8: ???

I’m worried about a lack of increased ram and storage !

A larger screen rumores if true will beg for more interactive WatchOS apps and those will be hungry for more ram! Taking up more storage as well.

If true, same cpu, then there is a slow progression for Watch to be the main processing component to Apple AR Glasses.
