All these 3D and touch shenanigans need to end. 3D was cool for about two movies, then it just got annoying to pay the extra. Plus you need those stupid glasses that run $200 a pair and a stupid expensive TV to play them at home. I don't want a 3D iPod. This crap about a touchscreen mac is getting old too. The iPod and smartphones, along with the iPad and it's android counterparts are about the only things I can think of a touchscreen being appropriate for.

they've already released glasses-less 3D TV's. Current ones with glasses are NOT expensive, my friend just picked up a 65" Mitsubishi 3DTV for $700. The glasses online hover around $80, not $200. You have two eyes, your brain is meant to see in 3D. I'm sure when color came out you would have thought it was a fad as well and said your black and white TV will be what lasts. And you probably thought HDTV was a fad. And I highly doubt you've seen a sporting event in 3D or played a game or simulator in 3D where you're actually in control, that is quite an amazing experience. If you think 3D is just a fad and useless, poke one of your eyes out cause you use it 100% of the time in real life and the only reason media wasn't 3D from the getgo (which in fact it was if you look at original stereo graphs that popped up just as the photograph itself did) was it was impossible to deliver en masse. Come back in a few years when more than just a few dedicated channels are in 3D and no one needs glasses and it's common place and try to rationalize staying behind the times and being unable to recognize patterns or understand human perception and cognition.

Wrong people are buying 3DTV just not as high the industry thought.. Every time I go into Best Buy I see people leaving with a new 3DTV.. So there are people buying just not at high rate..

Consumer electronics executives say TV sales will improve once more 3D content becomes available next year (2011) and when consumers start recording their own content on 3D-enabled camcorders.

"Just like how high-definition TV started in sports and movies, as 3D evolves, it will go with sports and movies and then become more of an everyday thing.

The PS3 has over 20+ games that can be played in 3D. There is over 30+ Blu-ray movies in 3D.. So this year will change with the new 3DTV's and redesign 3D Glasses..

P.S. no where in that link it said people where not buying 3DTV. It just says it sold very low and not at all..

Seriously just because there isn't a lot of content yet doesn't mean it's a gimmick, it's just in the early phase and those of us who see where it's headed are adopting it early and loving it.

I'm sure those of you who want to rationalize their outdated TVs are the same people that thought the iPhone was a gimmick when it first came out because they just "stuck a phone in an iPod" and "it's not going to compete with RIM" and the "app" phenomenon hadn't even begun yet and "$600 is too much for a phone no one will ever buy it." Right. How many billion downloads have there been just a few years later? It's called looking forward. Apple does it, and if you respect apple you should be able to do so as well. As Steve said quoting Ford, if he asked his customers what they want they'd say a faster horse.

A) Because it is a technology which degrades the experience, and distracts the industry from focusing on what people want.
B) We don't like being force-feed, by the industry, something no-one ever asked for in the first place.
C) If we know shoot this down, they might start actually making more movies and TV content in 3D... which means us people who aren't taken by gimmicks end up suffering (have you actually watched a movie in 3D? It sucks!).
D) Look what happened to the stereo amp/receiver market after they chased gimmicks rather than quality. (or so many other markets that could be used as an example)

Don't be so pedantic.
A- It doesn't distract at all, quite the opposite, I was so engrossed in Avatar even though it has one of the worst and most recycled stories in recent cinema.
B- We're not being force fed. All the 3D films I have seen had 2D versions as well, the 3DS also has a 3D-off switch. I wouldn't call being given more options "force fed". It's an improvement to some film genres that a lot of people want, clearly. It's no fault of them or the film industry that you have a problem with it.
C- Oh no, they're going to make video in 3D? I wonder if, 5 years ago, those SDTV owners worried about everything being recorded in HD and how much it devastated their lives. And yes I have seen 3D films. The effect was perfect and engrossing, I had to wear 3D glasses over my own and that thought bothered me for a few seconds before the film started.
D- Yes because that is a serious global problem, overall quality improved to the point where all they could do was add "gimmicks"? I sincerely hope you're still using the pinnacle CD player and haven't bothered with gimmicky tech like MP3 and iPods.

Apple is not going to waste their time with 3D it's dead in the water like it was back in 83/84, looked the same back then ie blurry a huge aspect ratio (3D can't do 2:35) and non cinematic looking because 24fps and 3D don't gel, Avatar was an okay flick but better on TV after ripping the BLU with MakeMKV 1:1, that version looked like a movie.
3D blew it in 83 and we don't need it now, it was introduced then for the same reason as it is now, to get punters back to the cinemas because we were all ripping VHS movies.
Check out the 83/84 3D graveyard - Spacehunter Adventures in the forbidden Zone 3D, Jaws 3D, Friday The 13th Part 3D, Metalstorm The Destruction of Jared Syn 3D (the worst film ever made that everyone needs to see) and Comin' At Ya 3D.
3D is dead on arrival, 4K is the next step but in the meantime we'll be introduced to 2K in the HDReady way (4KReady).

Personally I think 3D is stupid and I wouldn't want it in any device I'd buy - The whole concept is really overrated. 3D was pretty amazing to watch avatar at the movies a while ago... but now its just boring. My local movie theatre doesn't have 3D, so most of the movies I see can't be seen in 3D - I don't miss it at all...

3D iOS Devices would be Way Cool!

I'd say it would be another competitive edge for iOS devices if you could do 3D gaming on them.

That would be way cool. Just imagine being able to watch Avatar in 3D on the new iPad 2.

Awesome.:)
