I'm guessing like the iPad 2, this will be the update where they pour all their money into the display and battery to handle it, and just put the minimum into the the processor upgrade to maintain he same level of power.

In which case, V.3 will be the sweet one to get, when the display and battery have made the big leap and the processor gets the big boost.

Until then I'll enjoy the lightweight battery, fast charging time, and better VNC performance of the lower resolution mini 1.

This just leaves me nonplussed. I'm still living with my original iPad 2 and loving it, and I hardly notice the difference between my 3GS screen and the 4S.

I am looking forward to it, I have the ipad 3 and iPad mini and the combination of a retina screen with the portability of the iPad mini (which makes the larger iPads seem pretty clunky) is pretty much exactly what I'm looking for.

Sure 'retina' would be better for text, but is that all Apple has this year? Adding 'retina' to old things?

Almost nobody knows the answer to that, so I'll wait and see...

So Apple has decided to go with a inferior quality component and charge us sky high prices? Adios iPad mini! Not touching anything with LG Panel on it!

Just ask the rMBP and MBA users here in the forum including me who had to go through many returns to get a good one with a Samsung panel!

Can't wait. I plan on selling my 64GB 4G iPad 3 for a 64GB wifi iPad mini. My eyesight is better than 20/20 after corrective lenses, so small screen won't be a big problem.

I'm contemplating doing this as well, but I love the larger display on the full size iPad, but want the portability of the mini.

same thoughts here

My main questions are:

How much (if at all) thicker and heavier will it be than my current ipad mini

and how much will it cost.

I know a lot of people will suggest that it will come in at the same price points as the current mini, but I'm not so sure.

Exactly. I would also add: how is the battery life.

If the weight, price and battery life are the same, I probably will upgrade. If I can wait until 2014 to do so, I'd prefer that.

With the mini going to match the resolution of the bigger iPad; think we might see another resolution increase on the bigger one?

Otherwise...why even get the big iPad? It's more expensive and same screen resolution and less pixel density.

1) You can't perceive the difference without holding it three inches from your face
2) It would increase cost
3) Displays of that resolution are difficult to manufacture
4) It would be extremely taxing on the processor and battery

I see your point, but I thought that Retina Display meant it is the most your eyes can handle. So would a resolution increase matter?

You are probably not wrong and then I do the same. The weight is a major factor for me - when Retina adds too much I´ll enjoy the first gen.

Most people will not be able to see the pixels on either display, so at that point it'd be all about size preference. Some people will want a smaller package to easily carry around, while others will want more area to work and view shtuff. I'll have to check out a retina mini at the store to see if its worth the size drop. I lovvveee my big iPad.

Sounds like we're in the same camp. The mini is fine for what I do but the processor is noticably slower than on the iPhone5. I'll wait for the 3rd gen or further iPad mini before considering a replacement.

Good points but for me the issue is that my old eyes aren't as sharp as they used to be, (or ever were but that's another story). Sure the smaller screen might be sharper but I'm debating as to whether to go with the big one just so I can see things more clearly. Weight is not an issue. OTOH the smaller one is more portable and will fit in a pocket, bag, sleeve, better. I'm on the fence right now and likely won't make up my mind until they come out and I can compare specs.

People believe analysts/rumors/"reports" when they want it to be true.

I want it too, but I see near zero chance of this happening in 2013 at all, much less within the next few months:

Screen power consumption
Screen thickness
Screen weight
GPU performance
GPU power consumption
Battery capacity
Battery thickness
Battery weight
Cost and margins and end price
Yields and supply

The mini already sells well, and to change it to retina, all of the above must be addressed--without making it noticeably heavier/thicker, or you lose much of what makes the mini great. The mini (unlike the full 10" iPad) is already part of Apple's newer generation of lighter batteries/hardware. There are limits to how fast you can squeeze blood from that stone. Also remember the newest iMacs: yields were low, so they would have sold more iMacs total if they'd waited to release them!

Think 2014 for a retina mini. On the bright side: also think faster mini this year, and lighter 10" iPad this year.

Why do some people hear any Apple news (or fiction in this case) and assume this particular item is the last thing we'll hear from Apple? It's very odd.

And as soon as the mini comes out with a higher dpi get ready for all the people to complain that they can't stand to even look at the "crappy"iPad3/4/5 display!

Yeah, I'm kinda torn up about that too. What I think I'll do is trade for the mini, and then eventually buy a Surface Pro as soon as they make a model that doesn't use a fan. I deal with documents all day, so it would be nice to have two tablets. Android would be cool, but it kind of doubles up on iOS and anything an Android can do that an iPad can't (like easy emulation of old videogame consoles), the Surface Pro will do as well.

Of course what I *really* would hope for is for from a second tablet is for Apple to release a tablet version of an OSX/iOS combo, which can bootcamp into Windows 8 if I ever need it for something specific.

ZOMG there's never going to be a Retina Mini! Anyone who knows anything about screen resolution knows this!

LG make those crappy piss yellow LCD panels for the iMac, LG's screens are not as good quality as Samsung or Sharp / JapanLCD, so would not touch any LG panel device no matter what. Only Samsung / Sharp / JapanLCD for me thanks

Lots of stupid opinions form analysts. Comments are all over the place on whats really going on.

Its just best to listen to what executives say on earnings calls. Products will be coming in fall and winter. Most likely a new iPad mini will be one of them.

You always know when you get close because actual parts start to leak. We're not there yet but I'm assuming this summer that will start to happen.

I'm still holding onto my little scrap of hope for sometime in May to have an actual release, and be holding a iPad Mini 2 in my hand(s)

I love your idea of old

The iPad mini was released 6 months ago
