Massive blasts hit fuel depot
A huge fire is burning at an oil distribution depot in Hertfordshire after a series of explosions which could be heard more than 100 miles away. Police say two people are being treated for serious injuries and 34 for minor injuries.

So that's what woke me up this morning, I thought it was a truck hitting the big pothole on the A20.

I live the other side of London to this, apparently the blast knocked people in the local area out of their beds!!

Holy smoke!

Look at that sky -- that almost looks apocalyptic. Didn't get woken up this morning in Central London but some were saying the blast could be heard in Holland.

Haven't been out today yet -- can't see much looking out west from a 4th story flat.

When reading the thread title, my first inclination was to think that it happened at some location n the Middle East. Regardless, it is a frightening image.

This is what I see from my window now! I used to work at 3Com UK - only 30meters from the huge petrol tanks (one of which apparently exploded) The whole house shook at 6:02 AM - really scaring the crap outta me!!

Hemel Hempstead is covered in smoke.

I felt my house shake a little, and it woke me and the cat up at 6am this morning too. I live in Sunbury-On-Thames which is about 30 miles south.

Hmmm Fox News online are putting a terrorist spin on it.... someone heard a plane before it happened...... its also in the Country of Hertordshire lol.

Granted, I might not have the journalistic resources of the mighty Fox News Network at my disposal – but that might just have been a plane heading to/coming from one of London's airports – possibly Luton Airport, which if my sense of geography isn't letting me down can't be much more than 10 miles away?

God bless Fox indeed.

The BBC are reporting that this could burn for days, other explosions are a possibility.

The site usually carries 250,000 tons of fuel of different types and this is now thought to have started as a petrol fire.

Too short a period of a burn to send in the specialized fire teams from Houston, which specialize in industrial settings instead of the well fires.

wow, its wierd.....all that is happening around J8 of the M1, and i am around J23. i still feel pretty close!

the smoke is drifting sown south, that is where my non-uni home is:(

it has not been a good year for the Oil industry.

More bad news for the people of Hertfordshire – I've just heard on BBC News 24 that John Prescott is on his way to the scene.

LOL. Oh the humanity!

Oh no... the fleet of Jags he'll be arriving in will use up all the remaining petrol in England. :(

It woke me and the wife up this morning. We're about 15 miles away. It was bloody loud! It was like a cupboard collapsing downstairs or something.

I went for a long walk today but couldn't see much apart from a rather black cloud to the south. Apparently the smoke didn't drift north. The satellite pics show it spreading south to the east and west.

Apparently they store 60 million gallons of aviation fuel there....
