heya, did any of you get any kind of confirmation of your order? I looked at my account and don't see anything in the "My Orders" section... Nor did i get any kind of email confirmation.

No, no confirmation at all. I submitted another request since it's been so long since the first one. This time it said my copy would ship in 2-4 days instead of the 10 days quoted the first time.

I posted a question about Beta shipment on the Mathworks forum and got a reply very quickly:

Seems like we can expect these things pretty soon!

I ordered almost a month ago and have not heard anything. I do not think my order has gotten lost or anything since there people who order before me that have not gotten it either. I think your friend Jeff might not know what exactly is going on. If I have some free time I will try to contact MathWorks, I need this soon or I am going to have find another alternative.

Well, I contacted MathWorks. I hadn't gotten it yet because my order was canceled along with everyone who ordered before October 13th. So I reordered today, I guess it will be a while longer...

I know a lot of people here order before me, if you haven't gotten it yet reorder.

Well, I'm happy to report that I came home this evening to find the Matlab Intel beta waiting for me :). I'm installing it now, and I'll report back on it.

EDIT: It doesn't work right at all :(. The UI is seriously messed up. It's mostly invisible. Completely unusuable. Over to the Mathworks website to start reporting bugs I go...

Ok, so apparently it was something wrong with my account, because I created a new user account and it worked fine there. So, last night, I saved my home folder, created a new user account then imported everything back over, and now Matlab is working fine.

I have to say that so far it works great. Until now I've been using Release 14 SP1, which while a huge improvement over Matlab 6.5 as far as Mac integration goes, had some pretty annoying problems. The use of the Java file dialogs was particularly annoying. Happily, this version uses the native file browser so you have your sidebar, search box etc. That's possibly not new with this version, but it's new to me, and quite welcome. Also nice that the menus are in the menubar now instead of at the top of the window(s). The Print dialog is still a little weird, but at least it's Aqua instead of X11 looking.

Speed seems good, although I haven't yet run any really intense stuff. The UI is much more responsive than on my PowerBook, but I'm not sure if that's because Matlab has improved or if it's just because my iMac is quite a bit faster than my PB.

Matlab being my last barrier to switching to an Intel Mac notebook, I'm sort of tempted to buy a new Core 2 Duo Macbook. Maybe after Macworld '07...

Thanks for the report. I have had my MBP for only a couple weeks. I have been without Matlab for over a month since my PC died. I am curently using computers at school, but am getting tired of not being able to work at home.

How long did it take from order to delivery for you? I put my [second] order in Friday.

I put in my second request on October 27. So, approximately 2 weeks to receive it. It came on a burned (but well labeled) DVD-R.

Did they tell you to put in a second request? I 'heard' they were telling people but I didn't get word of the problems until yesterday.

No, they didn't tell me. I only put in a second request because of the stuff other posters in this thread said. I don't really know if it helped or not, but it certainly didn't hurt.

I just got mine in the mail today, I'm pretty sure that's about three weeks after i made the order. Just finished installing. Haven't really tried running anything yet. Just a minor and shallow annoyance... anyone figured out how to keep just one icon in the dock for matlab? In order to start matlab, you have to run the app called StartMATLAB which opens X11 and then opens Matlab. So if you leave StartMATLAB in the dock you end up with two Matlab icons and the X11 icon in the dock while you're running. I suppose that's why i saw them offering to make a shortcut on the desktop, that's one solution, but i can't say i'm used to starting an app from the desktop. i'm a little ashamed of being so petty, i should be busting out my numerical analysis algorithms and stuff.

This is the nature of this program. It runs through X11, you can put that shortcut in the dock and when you quit matlab and x11 it will be the only one there permanently.

Yeah, that's probably the best way to do it, and that's the way I've always done it. Still, I know where you're coming from as it annoys me slightly too.

i remember when i first saw one of my profs using Matlab on a mac, and I noticed the two Matlab icons down in the doc, and I just assumed he was new to macs and didn't realize he could delete that old icon from an older version of Matlab. But now i understand....
