Mavericks and Finder

Just updated my MacBook Pro to Mavericks.

Everything working, except the Finder

If, for example, I have Safari open but then click on the desktop - nothing happens.

Also, no icons showing on the desktop

I can access the Finder by clicking its icon in the Dock,but that gives me the folder and not the desktop itself.

I've tried repairing permissions and verified the disc - all OK


Where has my desktop gone?
