Mavericks, HDMI + subwoofer problem

Since installing Mavericks last night, I'm no longer able to get any bass going to my subwoofer via a thunderbolt to HDMI adapter, into my AV system. I can get it to work through AirPlay via my AirPort Express which is fine if I just want to play some music but not when I want to watch a film through my TV. It worked fine in Mountain Lion.

Using a MacBook Pro, Early 2011.

Any ideas - or someone experiencing this issue?
