Mavericks-Missing Time Machine animation in Menu Bar

This always bugged me about Mavericks. I liked the visual indicator and I don't see why Apple couldn't disable it by default, if they're so inclined, and give us a terminal command to reenable it if we would like. It was a cute little animation. Then again, I still wish Apple would've let me retain all the nice visual stylings (leather calendar, contact book, linen, etc.) from 10.8 on 10.9 for the best balance of efficiency and aesthetics.
