I would like a new OS too, but I think the technology is just not there yet to make the leap.

Its like we wanted an iPhone in '98 . All the things that makes it great like Wifi, internet on 3G, online paying system(app store), storage capacity, and touch screen just wasn't there(or popular/cheap enough).

We are at the point where want a new OS but technology didn't bring anything new to make the leap like we did from OS 9 -> OS X .

According to 9to5mac, os x 10.10 is called Syrah:

This is a wine, whose name has several other variants one of which is Shiraz - named after the place name Shiraz - IN IRAN - NOT CALIFORNIA!

This is funny!

We've gone from cat names to place names in california named after dogs (mavericks place name was itself named after a dog)

And now we have wine names named after place names in Iran!

When they're working on developing the OS, Apple gives it wine codenames.

For example, 10.9 was cabernet.

This is then replaced with a more consumer friendly nickname such as big cats or CA places.

Syrah is a grape variety originally from France. It has no relation to Shiraz apart from the names sounding similar. Don't know why you made the assertion that they have anything to do with each other.

Anyway, it doesn't matter, this is just the internal code name for the OS, the marketing name will be something different.

Oh yes, and the place name "Mavericks" actually being based on the name of a dog: that _is_ pretty cool.

Syrah is a grape variety originally from France.

Are you sure it is originally from France? That is unlikely.

If you wanted to know the origins of this grape variety, then I assume you have read James Busby's 1834 book "Journal of a Recent Visit to the Principal Vineyards of Spain and France" in which he says that it came from Shiraz in Iran.

It's not off topic.

Syrah IS mavericks' successor (at least for now). They might change the name later. I hope they do. It's terrible!

OS X Grange Hermitage

or

OS X Screaming Eagle

or

OS X Château Lafite

would be much better!

iOS for iDevices, Mac OS for the Mac. The Mac's operating system should be called Mac OS (11, 12, 13,..), it's that easy.

A closer look at Apple's nomenclature reveals that their products thought for the consumer have the 'i' at the beginning of the name (iPhoto, iMovie etc.), while the products built for the pros have an 'X' at the end of their name (Final Cut Pro X, Logic Pro X etc).

But Mac is something in between - see the MacBook Air as the Mac for the consumer, while the Mac Pro is the pro's machine. So calling it OS X seems too 'pro', at least for MacBook Air and iMac users. MacBook Pro and Mac Pro users may see it differently.

Additionally to being called Mac OS 11, i wish the next version of the Mac's operating system would have these features:

• iOS-inspired UI
• Music app
• Movies app
• TV shows app
• Photos app
• Newsstand app
• iTunes split into 5 individual apps
- iTunes Store
- Music
- Movies
- TV shows
- iSync (revive it, i miss it!)
• Touch ID
• Control Center
• AirDrop from Mac to iOS/iOS to Mac

joepancake, A lot of those features listed wouldn't be used by the average consumer, so it would be a waste of space to have them on there. It could be an external, but Apple official, download.
