I have your first problem, I believe it's due to spotlight reindexing after every restart. Otherwise, it's been perfectly fine.

On my 2012 i5 MM which came with ML. The performance is about the same along with stability but I did a full erase followed by a clean install of Mavs.

I began officially using Mac OS X with Lion when I got my 2011 MBP (coming over from the PC world), but I do have experience with older versions of OS X being used at school, etc.

I have to say that Mavericks, while not the worst version of OS X to date (Leopard 10.5.0 and Lion 10.7.2/below takes that honor), definitely is full of its' own bugs. ML was the first version of Mac OS X I used on my MBP that was a 10.x.0 version, and I remember how buttery smooth it was and how flawlessly it worked right from the start. Mavericks definitely has some issues, but the WORST version of OS X? I'd have to say Lion was, not Mavericks.

I was looking through some old forum threads at MR, and I saw a very similar discussion taking place when Tiger was first released, and following the 10.4.1 release, people were complaining how Apple had gone downhill, etc. Pretty much the same thing as now. So, based on that, I'd say that pretty much every 10.x.0 version of Mac OS X comes with the expected frustrations/moaning, and that this usually resolves itself by 10.x.3 - I think 10.8.0 was pretty much the only version of Mac OS X that wasn't met with widespread frustration, IIRC.

tl;dr: Mavericks should be mostly sorted out by either 10.9.2 or .3.

As I've said to many many people before in hundreds of threads all exactly the same as this one.

When 10.9.2 comes you won't be disappointed anymore.

Not a single one of Apple's .0 or .1 releases were ever perfect and while you all happily reminisce about Snow Leopard. SL's .0 to .2 releases were a total train wreck as well.

The rose tinted glasses often make us forget.

i usually wait till the x.2 ubstall, but I bought a new rMBP and it came with ML, and it worked pretty well and i upgraded 4 other machines with no issues.

i use zero add-ons that try to modify system behavior.

In addition, I suspect his hard drive is nearly full. It should be replaced with a larger one or an SSD of sufficient size.

I have a 1TB 7200RPM HDD with over 500GB of free space, so that's not the issue. I am thinking of buying an SSD and doing a clean install though. That would probably solve some of these issues.

I have the same mid 2009 MBP with 8G RAM, upgraded from ML to Mavericks, it's running perfectly, much better than ML. BTW, I have a 256G SSD inside. So that might play a critical role in the smoothness.

It may be the worst release for you, but this is not a widely held opinion. It's generally considered one of the better ones.

Maybe you had a botched install/update. Try reinstalling it

Plenty of space then :) You could carry out the fresh install for free to see if it improves things....then clone the install to the SSD (or carry out a fresh install to the SSD if you wanted...)

I have to agree. I'm not very happy with Mavericks.

1.) Terrible slow down once iPhoto has been opened and stays even though the app has been closed. Its as if memory is not being cleared efficiently. Only a reboot fixes it.

2.) Every resetting wallpaper which I'm surprised they have yet to fix.

3.) Constantly being asked to reauthorise iTunes for my user account after which I'm told the computer has already been authorised.

I did a clean install of mavericks on my 2011 iMac. No 3rd party apps installed except for twitter, 100GB is used out of my 1TB HD. I suppose 2GB isn't enough but when u have hardly any apps installed, I don't think I need a lot more.

You have 2GB RAM? That IS small these days, iPhoto will take a chunk of it, your memory stats probably show quite a bit of swapping which will slow things down. I'd be VERY surprised if you didn't have similar issues under ML and Lion though....

2) I've not seen, my wallpaper stays/changes just as asked.
3) I see after every OSX upgrade while iTunes sorts out the hardware and software instances that are authorized. But again I saw the same when going Lion to ML and ML to Mavericks

Sounds like Mavericks is not for you, so don't use it.
You don't have to answer the topic go play agry birds and enjoy mavericks

I use os x since snow leopard this is the worst release ever countless bugs, danger to burn your gpu power management is not working with open cl apps gpu stuck in high frequency until restart, slow restart slow, slow sleep and wake, slow shutdown, slow in everything.

I am kind of curious for those that have upgraded, did you do a clean install or upgrade from a previous version OS. Or if you did upgrade, did you upgrade from one of the previous (SL,L) versions.

I have upgraded from ML and it hasn't been the the best performance. I actually liked ML a lot. It was pretty darn stable for me and I had zero issues with it, for what I was doing.

3. Power management?
So this one is tricky. As I said, I am using a 2009 MBP to judge the power management, so the battery life isn't going to be as great as a new MBP. However, I think its safe to say that the battery performance should not be worse than before. Although my battery is 4.5 years old, it still contains around 75% capacity through deliberate care and maintenance on my part. I have maintained and cycled the battery pretty well to maximise its life.

Although, I'm not too fond of Mavericks, I find that my battery life came with a positive outcome. Although i do have a 2012 Macbook pro, i roughly had an hour increase in battery life. Went from about 7 hours of wifi usage and normal tasks like microsoft word, web browsing, email, iPhoto, iMessage, iTunes and half screen brightness to about 8 with Mavericks. I know I'm not the most demanding user when it comes to my Macbook pro (i leave most of that to my custom Windows machine), but to most of the average users out there, I'm sure that mavericks provided a decent upgrade.

I will say that i did a fresh install after backing up all my files, so i'm not sure if that would fix the issues you are having.

As for programs loading slowing, my experiences are still the same. They start up with one click and one bounce. My MBP boots up in about the same time as mountain lion did, but now it boots down much much faster with Mavericks.

The wallpaper issue you are having, that i honestly don't know. Maybe yo could double check you wallpaper/screen saver settings to make sure it isn't checked to change every few hours (or days).

If you are willing to back up your files, and are patient, try to do a fresh install and hopefully things will clear up. :)

my (humble) observation, based on years of mac use and forum abuse:
whatever version of os x a particular person has the most issues in...is the worst os x release. for them.

EVERYONE has a different experience. i'm flying high on mavericks, others are struggling. 10.5 was not great for me. 10.6 was amazing, then, 10.7 less so.

it really boils down to the individual and his/her experience.

so really, these threads should be: "whatever version - the worst release of OSX to date for ME"....

The only time I hated Maverick is when I was using a MBA 13" 4GB and got Spinning BeachBall of boredom. I fixed that issue by selling it and buying a rMBP with 16GB RAM. Besides that, I'm really liking Maverick and so is my GF. Maverick is so fast on our mid 2012 rMBP's 16GB & flash storage SSD.

After your unnecessary insult towards that other member I consider your post/rant null and void.

That's awesome you ended up with a good experience. I have as well after I did an erase and install.

I'm really regretting it did not come with an uninstall app.

Mavericks, like most free apps in the app store are nothing but crap.

I was happy with ML.

Everyone who downloaded Mavericks should be offered a free full ML install.

if you purchased ML you can download and install again for free

Other than for a few initial issues, I really haven't had any serious issues with 10.9 on ether my 2011 or 2007 Macbook Pro...

The only real issue I've had with it is the way they've disabled the "Arrange By"-option in most directories (the Programs folder is the only one where it's still available). The most infuriating thing is that you can still access it trough the key commands, but as soon as you change directories, it'll reset to "Sort by" and in some directories it'll place the contents in a really weird way.

If I had to vote on the worst version I'd personally go with 10.5, as it introduced a lot of changes that made OSX heavier to run (so much that a lot of G4 machines became unsupported just because they couldn't run the OS well enough) and didn't really introduce many features that interested me. Sure, TimeMachine and Spaces were nice, but the reflective dock was just a waste of resources (probably why it went away) and most of the other new features could easily have been introduced in minor updates.

In short, it felt like an update they released because they had to because of a new version of Windows (Vista) coming out, not because it was needed or they had made so much progress that it was fitting.

Yeah, exactly, for everyone who NEEDS it. Speak for yourself. I did a full erase of hard drive and installed Mavericks and it runs beautifully. I really hate when people like you post ridiculous posts of FUD as if EVERYONE is having the same bad experience as you. :p
And when you said it was nothing but crap, you lost all credibility, coupled with your recent registration.

Everyone's experience with Mavericks will vary and a good fresh install (erase & install) can do wonders as you've experienced.
