I really hope they will include support for 2011 iMacs. I have one configured with a "home-made" Fusion Drive and would really appreciate the feature as I rarely switch it off...

why no fan, what if the cpu gets too warm?

No fan because Apple want you machine to be silent whilst you're not using it. If your CPU gets too hot then I guess that's too bad, but I'm sure Apple will have thought about it and will have things put in place to prevent your computer from melting its internals.

Power Nap is the kind of inspirational feature you just don't see anywhere else. Apple deserves a massive amount of credit for bringing this technology to more and more people.

Just a little concerned about this:

"During Power Nap, system sounds are silent and no lights or fans come on."

I doubt there is any real-life scenario where the CPU gets too warm by checking the mails, doing the time machine backup etc. every hour or so...

Are u running Mavericks GM?

I have 2011, without SSD at this moment so I can't confirm wether it's there or not.. :(

CPU is maybe working at lower mhz. It's probably do so very little (GPU isn't even on..) that passive cooling (heatsinks) will suffice.

If it gets near too hot the CPU will take short pauses (throttling) to cool down.

Power Nap on Machines without SSD or Fusion?

I have installed Mavericks GM on my new iMac (Late 2013) which does not have either a SSD or Fusion Drive. The option does appear for Power Nap I have activated but not yet tested it yet. Has anyone else noticed this?

I have the same on my late 2012 27" iMac. Not sure if it's working or not!

The tasks being performed during Power Nap are not CPU intensive, most likely performed with a single core, so even without a fan running, the CPU should not heat significantly. The cooling on the 2012+ iMacs consists of a substantial heat pipe to conduct away from the CPU and GPU to a finned radiator, which will still have some cooling by convection when the fan is not running.

Also, even if the CPU, or GPU, are subjected to a heavy load without active cooling, they will throttle, (down clock), before reaching damaging temperatures.

Something that should have been available from the start on all capable Macs, not just portables. Typical Apple.

Confirmed on my Mac mini with self-upgraded Seagate ST750LX003-1AC154 Laptop Solid State Hybrid Drive & Laptop Thin SSHD.

And a Mini (2012) with a regular HD.

Yes, GM.

A day late, a dollar short.

I hereby submit my humblest of deeply grovelling apologies on behalf of Apple that they didn't release every feature of every product simultaneously and to a schedule that suits you personally.

We have executed the developer responsible. Would you like his remains mailed to his family in jars or do you want them on your desk?

And yet it's just funny to the death how i can get this same feature on some of the shelf crappy PC for 300 bucks since forever, but of course it's just poor Apple that needs your rationalizations.

I have SSD installed in my iMac and i don't see it (mid 2011).

damnit... BTO? or did u install it urself later?

Hmmm what PC offers a "Power Nap"-like feature? :O

PS: are you dutch?

No, its just a simple Kingston 830 SSD. I can't recall exactly how it's called, but it's Intel smart something. I know, because i was setting a new PC at work and installed the support software for it ( there were settings for how often it checks for updates and other things).

P.S. The name suggests that indeed is the case.

It didn't come on all PCs. Day late and a dollar short. Pity.

(*note heavy sarcasm*)

I read somewhere that the 2012 iMacs use 50 percent less power when idle. That's why I think Apple is including this with models that don't have a SSD/ Fusion drive. I don't think they will add the 2011 iMacs, we will just have to see.
