When watching programming (tv, movie, etc.), if I press the pause button, it doesn't show how far I am into the program time-wise, only the remaining time left. This is a change from previous HBO Max app behavior, as well as every other streaming app, media player, and video device going back to the VCR. It's incomprehensible that they would change this basic functionality on purpose.

I figured it was just a bug that would be quickly corrected, but a couple months later and it still isn't fixed. After some google/MR searching, I can't find anyone mentioning this, so thought it might just be some issue with my Apple TV. So, I just tried deleting the app, rebooting the ATV, and then (re)installing the app. Still not showing the progress time.

Anyone know what else I can try?

Unfortunately they're using a crappy custom video player instead of the built-in tvOS one. That takes away a lot of the nice functionality of the one Apple makes.

I really wish Apple TV enforced some UI standards -- at the very least all the apps on there should have to use the same video player UI.

I think it is working as designed--nothing to fix.

So are you seeing the same behavior in the Max app as I'm seeing?

I suspect yes. The only time I see is the time remaining, shown on the right. If you note the length of the video before it starts, you can determine the current progress.

When you are fast forwarding time elapsed shows underneath the thumbnail.

Yeah, it's apparently a "feature" and not a bug.

I also suspect the Max app is not utilizing the Apple TV's "reduce loud sounds" feature. The movie I watched last night had me riding the volume control the whole damn time. I really hate that.

Before the horrible rebrand to "Max" the old HBO Max app went from using the standard tvOS player, to then introducing a very broken app that did not use it, only to do a 180 and start again using the standard player. They quite clearly do NOT know what they're doing over there.
