i have heard people put 2x 2gb sticks and the OS read 3.3 on some. this is why i asked. i am not sure of the specifics on any of this. this is my first macbook.

Your core duo macbook only supports 2GB ram. A core2duo supports 3GB. You need 2x1GB 200pin ddr2 laptop ram, pc5300 or faster. Cheap, $25-35 on newegg.

The hard drive is easy. Your MB supports 2.5in SATA laptop hdd, any maker. 500GB 5400rpm or 320GB 7200rpm is about $100 on newegg. Or you can get a WD MyPassport 160 for $72, and swap the hdd from that into your MB and vice versa. A 160GB hdd is about $55-60, and with free shipping on the WD, it saves you money if you didn't want to go bigger.
