How are you able to import into iMovie, from the camera via USB cable, or directly from the card?

Do you see a import window like this? If so, you hover the mouse over the image in the viewer and play controls show up.

I connect via USB. NO I am unable to play clips without importing them when connected to USB.

Just to be clear, you see an import screen like the one above but when you hover your mouse over the image for the selected clip and click on it, a player control button doesn't pop up for preview?

If not, you'll have to find another way to preview. If the finder doesn't see the card in the camera when connected by USB, you are probably hosed, unless the special canon view software app will help.

When SD the card is in a card reader connect to the Mac, you see the screen above and you can preview?

I am able to preview and play the clips when I eject the card from camera and insert them into my MacBook Pro 2012 which has a SD card slot. For this iMovie works just fine. It’s just a pain having to eject the card all the time. So I have a better idea of just previewing the clips on camera or HD TV.

Have you been able to import footage from your XA11 into iMovie or FCP? Wanted to ask because it's not on Apple's list of supported cameras.

In case anyone else wants to know, I was able to successfully import video recorded on the Canon XA11 to iMovie and Final Cut Pro in both MP4 and AVCHD with no problems. I ended up going with MP4 because I could immediately share clips as a preview without any conversion, but both formats worked fine. The format I used was 24 Mbps for both MP4 and AVCHD. I didn't test the 28 Mbps LPCM (59.94P) or 35 Mbps (59.94P), so I can't confirm whether or not those work. Didn't need slo-mo, so went with a more standard frame rate. I was very happy using this camera.
