Man, about time. I was looking at a Mazda 6 in 2014, and they kept saying CarPlay was coming. And while I don't love everything about CarPlay, the fact that the other car I was looking at was enough of a tie-breaker. Bought another car from the same company a couple years later. I assumed Mazda finally got CarPlay implemented years ago. Sort of surprised it took this long.

**** you mazda. I bought two cars from them one in 2015 and my wifes in 2016. The 2016 came with the promise that carplay would be added with a software update. That is clearly never happening. I love the cars but I won't buy another mazda if they don't make good on that promise.

I purchased a 2017 Mazda CX-5, and every single Mazda salesperson had been told that for sure we'd have Apple CarPlay available for our cars as a firmware update by fall 2017. Here we are six months past that deadline, and they are just now adding it to select new models.

I for one am delighted with my car, but it was inexcusable that Apple CarPlay has taken so long to implement, and we were lied to about upcoming availability. I have to say the lies they told to help induce a sale, make me very wary of trusting them again.

Come on Mazda, get this done, honor your promises. Roll out the firmware ASAP. Or you won't be getting a repeat customer.

I drive a 2017 Mazda CX5 and it is a great value vehicle
I really have no desire for Car Play though, so lack of it never factored in my car choice
If it was retro to the 2017, I might try it out, but honestly it doesn't have any real appeal to me

I drive a lot of rental cars because my job involved a great deal of travel. I have to say, once you're used to having it, you really miss it when you don't. It is an exceptionally nice feature to have. And I am angry that Mazda totally lied about implementing it for so long.

When I pick out my rental car, I deliberately gravitate towards models that have it. Especially if it doesn't have navigation.

The CX-5 was on the short list to replace my Mazda3 when it was hit and totaled, but I wanted CarPlay, so I ruled it out. I ended up going with a Honda CR-V. Knowing what I know now about both CarPlay and the CR-V, I wish I would have gone with the CX-5. It was a hell of a lot more fun to drive than the milquetoast CR-V and CarPlay isn’t all it’s cracked up to be.

I was really close on the CR-V and the CX-5. I almost went with the Honda, but fortunately for me, when two dealers owned by the same people, on the same street, priced a lease on both vehicles at identical prices point, the Honda was more than $100 a month more expensive. So I passed, and am so glad because the CX-5 is way better, despite Mazda lying about CarPlay.

I think it was a great choice for Mazda to go to a normally aspirated engine and traditional gearbox over tiny turbo and CVT. The Honda may be a shade faster and more fuel efficient on paper. But if you try and use that speed and acceleration, you'll have to deal with that whiney annoying engine/gearbox, and if you're engaging that turbo, you can kiss those great fuel numbers goodbye.

It's really the new generation car con. Tiny turbo / CVT engines combinations seem like they would be a good deal in terms of 0-60 and MPG. But in real life, they are annoying to drive, and unless you drive like a saint, you won't even come close to posted EPA figures.

same here I did my research and narrowed down to the Mazda 6 and Subaru. Subaru lost in part because at least I could play music wirelessly to Mazda connect and I liked how it drove better. its a 2016 so at least I can do the retrofit if it comes. I have been pleased now with the Mazda 6 as per the reviews I read before buying.
Birds of a feather. I drive a Mazda 6, my wife has an Outback.

I almost purchased a different car, but said screw it and purchased a CX-5, even though it didn't have Car Play. Mazda's are just so fun to drive, and the new CX-5's a pretty awesome. I wish they would have added it to ALL of their 2018 lineup. Oh well.

Quite so.

Assuming all recent Mazdas use the same Mazda connect system, then why is Carplay only coming to a single model? Seems kind of suspicious, as if there are larger hardware upgrades involved.

Mazda Connect was hacked a good while back to add Android Auto to it though, so that at least should be available to everyone.

Too late. My wife has a CX-5 which we were told at the time we got it that it will receive CarPlay in a future update. That never happened. I was due for a new car this year so we bought a Chevy for this exact reason. She will be getting a new one next summer. Sorry Mazda, we'll pass next time we change our cars.

The car industry (with a few high end exceptions) is always years behind what consumers want NOW to interface devices with vehicles. I remember after the iPod came out I couldn't find a car with a simple Aux input to connect my iPod. All sorts of shaggy solutions in lieu of a direct line in on the face plate of the radio/CD player (circa 2005).

I know someone with a 2013 Mazda3. The dashboard screen with the menus is seriously like something from the 80s. So rock-bottom basic, bought by Mazda at a rock-bottom price and then sold as a premium feature. Mazdas are good mechanically, but there's not much more. Apple CarPlay needs to be standard across the range yesterday if there is as much competition happening as they say there is. Equipment levels are so sleepy. Wake up!

On the contrary, last year they said support was coming so I purchased a Mazda3 in good faith. My mistake it seems.

Right there with ya, buddy. I bought my ‘17 3 after reading about the “retroactive” promise. Been patient for a year, and now it looks like it was an empty promise.
