I have an older digital back from Sinar that needs a Mac (software was never released for Windows) that has a powered FW.
At the moment I run it connected to my MBP 2012 13". The problem is, the 2012 (non-retina) has a TN panel. Better than most other laptops it be, it is still no IPS.
Does any portable computer (with Intel CPU) exist with a powered firewire and IPS panel? In extremo it could be a non-Apple laptop that I can hackintosh. No need for some powerfull hardware tough, I run the soft needed on 12" iBook G4 1,3 too without problems.

If such a thing does not exist, are the TB-FW adapters powered?

This is incorrect, my 2011 15" MBP was IPS.
I thought so too with the 2010 Model I had with the high-res matte screen, but they were all Active Matrix TFT/TN

Apple put IPS displays in iMacs starting around 2010, but the MacBooks didn't get it until the 2012 15" Retina MBP.

You may be misremembering, as I was, the premium feature of Apple's notebook displays at the time was actually that they were LED backlit. Which gave them really even, high brightness and viewing angles that were darn good, but they were not IPS.

Interesting - you are indeed correct.

And yes, I was 100% convinced it was IPS because it behaved like one. Can normally spot TN displays from a mile away.

MacBook pro 9.1 mid-2012 and bought a month before the "retina" ones on purpose

Good question. This old Amazon listing for the Apple Thunderbolt 2 to FireWire adapter
https://www.amazon.com/Apple-Thunderbolt-to-FireWire-Adapter/dp/B00SQ2CJUS
says :

“giving you a FireWire 800 port that supplies up to 7W for bus-powered peripherals like hard drives and audio devices.”

I couldn’t find an official Apple listing for it, though.

In my brief searching, I also ran across some other brand thunderbolt 2 to firewire adapter that claimed it provided 11 W. A more expensive solution would be to put an actual firewire PCIe card into an external PCIe box (with power supply), connected to the laptop via thunderbolt 3.
