Best two things to get for your Mac is undercover and to add a firmware password. In addition to AppleCare I've listed my entire setup on the home insurance policy so if they can't recover I'm covered. Of course being paranoid about locking it up is a big plus...thieves love apple stuff (and why wouldn't they with the premium it commands).

That sucks man, I hate it when people steal stuff. Would it really kill that person to work for what they want? You busted your hump to get that MBP and now some POS decides they want it and you lose out. I hope they connect to wifi so Find my Mac will get it! Best of luck on getting a replacement!

Yes it would kill them to work for what they want. Society is now at a point to where it is The Makers vs. The Takers. We have an entitlement society and the perpetrator felt entitled to help distribute your hard work to the people that don't work too hard.

Do check with your office, they must have some sort of insurance policy that covers theft. Don't let them bully you into not filing a claim or saying that they don't have insurance to cover this kind of stuff, which they may say because they don't want to have a claim on their policy or pay the deductible. Especially if you were using this laptop for to perform company business, they need to take care of you. How your company handles this matter will tell you ALOT of your company.

Some scumbag took my laptop right off my desk in my office. Find my Mac can't find it! Police report filed...little hope though. At least it's Friday

Have you looked for it on eBay or Craigslist yet?

My company doesn't insure personal property so I never take my MBP to work. In cases like these, i just use the laptop the company gave me (Windows, Dell).

Sad it got stolen - hopefully something will work out.

For future reference Undercover beats the pants off Find My Mac. I have it installed on all my Macs. And check out Witness, which turns a Mac iSight camera into a motion-sensor camera. If Witness had been installed on the MBP and you own an iPhone you would have received an alert and images of the thief while he was in the process of stealing your MBP.

Very interesting, and probably goes well together with a Kensington lock.

PS: May the thieves' hands (or testicles) fall off!

Know how you few, quite a few of my friends had their personal belongings stolen in uni. Those people work fast! She left her bag on the seat, turned to speak to a friend for a few seconds and it was gone when she turned back to get her purse!

Laptop, blackberry, wallet (cash+personal documents), thumbdrive with all her uni assignments on it, car keys...not to mention the hassle of getting her credit cards cancelled, home locks changed, just in case, as well as IDs replaced. She was so worried someone might use her stolen ID to borrow from loan sharks or something. :(

Scum, every last one of them. Hope you get your culprit soon.

that is terrable

Last night my wife and I went to a friend's house for dinner so I activated Witness on my home office iMac.

Just for fun I didn't deactivate it before I entered my office upon returning home. Within a few seconds I received an audible alert from my iPhone. The alert banner informed me that Witness had detected an intruder. When I opened Witness on my iPhone there was an image of my home office. I wasn't pictured because I had left immediately after Witness had detected me; if I had remained it would have sent multiple images of a burglary in progress.

There was no indication from the iMac that Witness had sent an alert and was transmitting images of my office. Using the Energy Saver preference pane display sleep is enabled while computer sleep is disabled. The iSight camera light does not come on. All an intruder sees is a Mac that appears to be in sleep mode while Witness does its thing in the background.

Since Witness does not work in total darkness it is best to leave a light on but even someone using a flashlight will usually be enough light for Witness to do its thing. But having a room light on will result in better images of the thief.

A cool feature is automatic activation and deactivation via the free Witness iPhone app. If you enable Location Services Witness is automatically activated when you leave the premises and deactivated when you return.

You can have every Mac you own enabled on a Witness account. That means if you have a desktop Mac and a portable Mac they are both capable of alerting you when someone has been detected by their iSight cameras.

It should be noted that Witness alerted me within seconds of my entering my office. By being alerted so quickly a Witness user may be able to interrupt someone walking off with a portable Mac or alert law enforcement to a burglary in progress. (Of course, a protected MBP must be open so that its iSight camera can do its thing.)

Witness is worth every penny of its $40 cost to cover every Mac you own. (Undercover users were recently offered a $10 discount on Witness so I took advantage of it.) And it's not just good for protecting Macs; if you have a protected Mac in a house or dorm room Witness is an easy to use and affordable home security system.
