happened to me once... not sure what i did, but here goes...

you could:
1. update to 10.4.10 and see what happens.
2. back-up your drive, wipe it, and reinstall OS X.
3. just re-install OS X.
4. leave it. unless you don't really mind it running slow (which i guess you do, since you posted this), just let it be. it worked for me, but then i got a new HD because i needed a bigger one.
5. bring it to an apple store. they'd definitely be able to help.
