Go with the 8GB model, you cant add it later.

I wouldn't worry about the the SSD size, i have rMBPs with 128, 256 and 512GB the oldest once being 128GB and don't have any space issues. I use cloud and/or NAS devices for all my documents.

I have to agree here. Your only convenient option if you run out of space is to get a little 128gb flash drive and keep it parked in one of your USB ports -- but that's a lot slower and less convenient than just bumping it up now...
Nnnope. I bought a 128 GB Samsung EVO+ microSD card and a bay for less than $1 delivered. Within a year or two 256GB cards will start becoming commonplace. Yes, it's slower, so I don't put my system folder on it ;) it has my iPhoto library.

Hi,

Wondering if you guys can help me, I've never been a mac user but thinking of joining the resistance.

Thinking of purchasing the one below:

http://www.apple.com/ie/macbook-air/specs.html

The 13" Mac with 128gb SSD (or should I go for 256gb?)

I'm wondering, would 4gb be enough for Microsoft office, spotify and webbrowsing at the same time?

Perhaps run virtual windows and some programming (programming like visual basic, python, nothing extreme) on it if that's possible

I'm not looking to do any gaming (maybe some classic games on an emulator)

I need something that'll last me the next 7-8 years and I've been advised that macs are the way to go.

Thinking of purchasing this tomorrow but I want the best 1st experience with a mac to be the best as possible!

Thanks.

Fewer and fewer new Macs are coming with 4GB nowadays. In fact, the rMB and rMBP default is 8GB of RAM. I'd also say that 256GB SSD is the minimum spec for future proofing yourself for the long term. E.g. I now have a 5yo 2010 MBA which I decided to get 128GB/4GB for instead of the default 64GB/2GB. That was a wise move on my part as its specs are still current but for how long?

I would get the 256 GB and 8 GB. Take a look at the Refurb store if money is a little tight, you get the same mac with the same warranty for less money.

8GB for sure!

I have a couple of 4 GB MBAs and one 8 GB - the difference is incomparable even just in browsing alone.

he could also buy another SSD and replace the 128GB one, but I agree, the best way is just to get 256 (with 8GB of RAM)

Fore these tasks it's enough. You can even play some L4D2 and Portal on the MBA. I got this and a MB retina and I am liking the 13 inch MBA more as a computer. The MBr is a really cool beta product to show off what the future has in store.

If you're in the US; Best Buy is selling the MBA new for $799 right now and an open item unit can be had for $727, maybe even cheaper in store. Great deal IMO! The only reason I might not keep mine is because the MBr I got is so much better a deal, not that it's a better computer though.

"Future Proofing" is kind of a silly notion because you never know what direction tech will go. You can have a device like the 1st Gen iPad which only lasted 3 years before it was obsolete, but then you encounter an iPad 2 which is still usable and supported to this day.

I tend to sell off my devices within 2 years anyway. My current oldest apple device is my Mac Pro at a year and 4 months.

To answer your question though... yes 4gb RAM is enough for web browsing while you have Spotify and MS Word running.
