I have a MacBook Air 13" 2012, i5/8/256

Is upgrading to the latest MacBook a huge upgrade? i mainly use it for lightroom editing of pictures i take while traveling and I have a ton of travel videos that I use macbook air to edit and process using iMovie. i hardly use macbook air for watching youtube and movies now because I have an iPad mini 4, but i'm sure with the macbook retina display, it would be nice to stream movies and shows.

Just how much faster is the latest Macbook with lets say the 1.3 ghz i5 processor and 8 gb of ram (does adding 16 gb make a difference?) compared to my MBA 2012? will it significant or what?

I don't have scores for u. But u can find them on the geekbench site.
I upgraded from the same air to the 2016 MB M5. It feels already faster cos of ssd. And the GPU is 50% plus.

But for video u would be better with a MBP because they have a fan to cool longer processing times. The MB will throttle sooner or later

thanks for the reply. the MBP 13" seems intriguing. i dont have plans to upgrade anytime soon, maybe in 2 years or sooner if and when my MBA 2012 dies on me by then.

It's going to depend entirely on your usage, but most likely the difference will be extremely pronounced. Your editing will probably benefit from the better display, your exports will benefit from the dramatically faster SSD, and the editing will also benefit from the improved CPU.

16 GB of RAM on a MacBook is arguably most justifiable if you are compressing 8GB on a current Mac into the yellow and especially the red. IMHO, for most Users, neither the CPU upgrades nor the RAM upgrades are justifiable (unless of course you need more than 256 GB storage, in which case you have no choice to get the i5.)
