I recently took possession of a mid-2012 13" MBA. Loving it. Wonderful.
Only one problem I'm hoping I can get advice from you all about.
My employer is unlikely to pony up for TB Monitor from Apple. Something about the $999 price tag...
Unfortunately if use the TB port on my MBA for a non-TB Monitor, I lose my ability to use it for my ethernet connection (wireless in my office is not reliable).
I'm hoping for a recommendation for an external monitor that I could run off one of the two USB 3 outputs on the MBA. Does any one have experience with this or recommendations?

You should get a usb 3.0 Ethernet adapter instead as the display would look the best through the TB port. Ethernet can run fine over usb. that what I would do in that situation with my air.

This is one of the first USB 3.0 to Gigabit adapters to have hit the market. That way you can use a TB->VGA/DVI/DP adapter to connect your display. The other way around unfortunately is not possible yet. I have seen a few USB 3.0 display adapters already but afaik none of them offer OSX drivers (yet)
