I have a late 2010 MBA and every now and again when I open the lid the wifi has crashed and I have to reboot or force shutdown as everything has ground to a halt.

I would first re-config AP point to use another channel, THEN if that doesn't work,
Re-install OS from scratch or reload a known-to-be-good image.
