I have a mid 2013 macbook air and after updating to OSX 10.9.3 my audio stopped working. This is affecting both my internal speakers and headphones

This is what I see when pressing the volume up and down:

(notice the symbol under the volume bar)

Any idea what is causing this? How can I fix this?

That's odd, nothing is coming up.

try plugging and unplugging the headphones; try doing this briskly! i've seen this work (on a friend's macbook pro).

Unfortunately I've already tried this and no luck =(

Before doing anything, back up your data. First, bring the computer to the genius bar and get it checked, and if it is broken they will likely replace it with a new one. If their tests result in no errors, you may need to reinstall the OS by holding command-r on startup.

First, try reinstalling OS X. Back up your data and then erase and install (hold command-R when you start the computer.) If that doesn't work, you need to bring the computer to an apple store and get it replaced.

or the reverse, go to a genius bar first...:D
