I am also new to the Mac world and I have a question about storing pictures. When I connect my camera the photos are imported into iphoto. When I open the pictures folder I do not see the actual photos. Is this actually backing up my photos from my camera to the computer where I can access them or are they stored within an iphoto database?

I have a 256gb macbook air, and i have a partitioned 320gb external hard drive (with 250 for time machine and 50 for other stuff), and i keep all my apps and music on my mac, but iMovie events and the iPhoto library are on my 50 gb partition.
