MBA - Suitable for me.

Sorry to bring up my old thread.

I have spent about an hour in my local apple retail store today having a play and looking at my options for an air.

I want an 11inch as the 13inch is a bit pricey.

I have 3options.
1st - 1.6GHz i5, 64GB flash storage, 2GB Ram - £798
2nd - 1.6GHz i5, 64GB flash storage, 4GB Ram - £873.60
3rd - 1.6GHz i5, 128GB flash storage, 4GB Ram - £939.60

The above prices are with student discount.

I think I would go for the 1st or 2nd option as I don’t need 128gb hard drive as the air won’t be my main computer.

The air will be used for University work, note taking, web, maybe music and movies; I have windows desktop to do the bulk of my work on.
Will the 2GB or 4GB ram be more suited for me? I don’t mind paying the extra to get 4 GB ram only if I would need it.

Get 4GB RAM for Lion - the 2GB machine may find you limited in the future
Only consider the Air over the MBP 13" if you have access to power during the day or in the lecture theatre as the Air will not go from 9–5 without some charging. The MBP on the other hand will last a little longer, though neither as well as the iPad. This depends a great deal on the nature of your course.

Unless you are confident of your requirements I would be tempted to wait until you have more information about the course. You may find systems for downloading lectures and notes, and contributing to student forums and even some software are better suited to a Windows laptop.

Thanks for the reply. My lectures are only about 10-4 so I should be ok without power, I am doing engineering course which means for some maths lectures I won’t need the air as I will do the work on paper. I have already done a year of my course, but I have moved University so starting again. The only software I may need to use is CAD, but I would do that at home on my windows desktop or on the University computers.

I would recommend you to go with 4GB of Ram with 128GB. I checked most of the displayed MBA in Apple Store and they all had approximately 70GB left on their hard drives. I think that they store their Itunes and photos on a shared drive in their network, not on the machine hard drive. But don't know why there are only 60-70GB or memory left. Most of the displayed machined are not installed with any other application such as Office, etc.
