Is your MBA attracting more attention than your previous notebook?

I guess i'm the opposite of most Apple fan(boys). I am a fan of Apple products but I'm often too self-conscious and embarrassed to show it in public because it might seem that I'm "showing off" or "have too much money". So, I tend to either cover it up with a case or be a bit more discreet about it.

I love how Apple products look but it's for me to enjoy not others.

I'd question whether I'd want to sleep with a woman who was attracted to me because of my computer. She'd be one weird chick.

Well actually, it might not be so wierd actually. I happen to LOVE tech gadgets from cell phones to laptops and have recently become a /shudder fangirl I guess.

Walking up to some dude with a rigid 13" MBA would be a great way to break the ice :D

That being said, I have to laugh at all of the haters on the OP. The fact that people had to rush into the forums to aggressively defend that they are NOT like the OP with all of the dignity and distain as possible. Rather than just skipping to the next post.

Your opinions are neither going to convince or change people. Just let people be happy. If the OP gets a chubby based on his tech gadgets big deal...Why allow it to offend your delicate sensibilities?

People confuse me....

Is it so pathetic to venture into the concrete jungle with your haughty MBA, and with your mind set, however much it tries to deny it, at 95% intent of displaying it? And maybe 5% or less of actually achieving some function of it's software?

In this era of atomisation juxtaposed with increased means of non-verbal aesthetic communication from your shave to your choice of shoe, is it so pathetic to repeatedly browse a pseudo-important pdf or a desperately meagre collection of photos from the last party you went to 3 years ago or an only subjectively funny gif you got off a forum over and over and over again, coffee after coffee, with the goal of someone spotting that yes, he must be kinda a big deal or haha he must have a sense of humor or ooh, he's popular and happening!

Tell me, is it so different in principle? I don't know

Sorry, my English is very good. Can someone translate this for me?

To me, a $999 laptop says nothing, but some people may think that a $999 laptop is a statement of how well off you are, in a down economy where most people would be heavily considering a $400 Acer/Emachines/Toshiba/Gateway laptop.

The funny thing to me is that the OP thinks he's compensating for something, as a guy in midlife crisis would with a Porsche. I'd be willing to bet the Porsche drivers in midlife crisis get laid more than the guy in midlife crisis driving a 1993 Toyota Tercel, lol. :D

You could look at this from a (somewhat male chauvinist) women's point of view:
The guy is carrying around a small expensive laptop. He didn't need to carry around some 17" Dell XPS monster to prove his manhood! What a man!

lol ;)

Of course what's good is also bad - you'll get the attention of a thief much faster if you're flaunting a MBA around than if you're carrying it in a bag unnoticed.

tl;dr - everything in your appearance, mba-inclusive, communicates, irrespective of owner's intent. This may have advantages...or the converse! Maybe, who really knows these things anyway? Hume?! Haha!

Speak for yourself.

I could care less what others think of the _computer_ I use.

In my life it's a tool, not a fashion accessory or something to boost my ego.

I'm just fine thank you.

This "look at me and my cool mac stuff" is nothing but childish BS in my opinion. It's the stuff of insecure, immature people.

Fanboys need to get a life.

Couldn't have said it better my self.

On these forums, the first 2 things people mention when comparing any mac to any competition are: Competition is ugly and it runs windows.

I dont care who you are trying to convince here but the fact that Macs have the look and the brand recognition by the masses influences you, and everyone else when deciding whether to purchase the competition(Ugly windows laptops) or Macs.

Trust me, you care. ;)

"It's so thin, its like its not there! Where is the battery?"

Granted, my housemate is a bit odd.
Haha nice, at the :apple: store recently I overheard, and I quote:

"I have to say that really is such a nice computer system"

Subject was an affable 50-ish year old gentleman, probably arable farmer. What a wonderful anachronism he was there in the store, as his infinitely more technophilic kids were putting the macs through their paces.

Let's all be honest now, we're not in this for osx, build, the untouchable trackpad, the battery and certainly not because its specs render it perfectly usable for everyday tasks at a fraction of the weight and size of similarly-specced notebooks.

Gotta say, these are the key reasons I did purchase a 13" MBA: ultralight portable with OSX and fantastic usability.

I've never purchased a piece of tech merely because it's stamped with a fruit logo. If M$FT made a best-in-class product that I needed, I'd buy it.

But our hearts are contented fifty-fold if a stranger passes but one compliment.

Not really.

This is a landslide so far, 90% - 10%

Out of interest, to those 10% who voted no, what notebooks did you have previously?

Now that we've all had the Rev D (2010) for a while, surely there're more anecdotes :)

And vote

The comment is the normal comment. Generally, people will say, "That's very thin." Some others are surprised a half-decent graphics card fits in there.

I had a 17" MBP. The 17" got far more attention when I first produced it from my bag than the 11" has.

MBA design is just boring

Let's all be honest now, we're not in this for osx, build, the untouchable trackpad, the battery and certainly not because its specs render it perfectly usable for everyday tasks at a fraction of the weight and size of similarly-specced notebooks.

We're in this because of the wow. Genetically this thing is purer than Eve. Aesthetic bombshell. Given the faculty, it'd espouse nothing but world peace. If i ever choose to pass by mine own hand, I need no blade other than Zeus's own 0.11" taper.

We revel in the fact that the MBA opens programs faster than any netbook can ever dream of. But our hearts are contented fifty-fold if a stranger passes but one compliment.

Feeling a little guilty, maybe exposed? Don't be. Our largely culturally-driven aesthetic desires aren't entirely maladaptive. The MBA and many Apple products are social devices. They can literally generate interaction. Heck Jobs himself in a recent keynote mentioned something about getting a email from a guy who thanked him for inventing the iPad as he met his gf after it got her attention.

So tell us about the interest you're receiving towards your MBAs, new or old, and in what setting :)

My old MBA got quite a lot of attention, mainly at airporst (I don't do the Mac-Starbucking-rimmed glasses thing). Specific anecdotes as I remember them.

I've included a poll as to whether or not your MBA is generating more interest than your previous notebook for both 11" and 13" models.

I don't quite get your excitement. It looks like a brick of aluminum. Apple tried their best to make it boring: trivial shape, no colors, no fancy shapes, no accents. If you wanted to make it even more boring, what would you do? Nothing. It's already there.

no need to flame the OP, he's just excited that people compliment his mac, but from reading his post, he seem like he's in love with his mac just for the looks, and hoping that someone, anyone, approach him to talk about it.
not trying to be mean but just telling how i see it.

so im gonna put my answer in for the OP post.
I have a lenovo x61s before i brought a 13" 2010 air. i always wanted a air but couldn't get a good price. i still use my lenovo, its light and long battery life (well gotta order some new battery since its lossing its hold), but the main factory in buying this air is 1st-weight, 2nd battery, 3rd osx (never used osx before), than finally the looks (im not gonna lie, the air is nice looking, why? because its simple, i like simple looks).
Never got any compliment about it, don't expect any either, but if they do want to, be my guess, i just reply thanks, but who care, practically almost everyone at my campus has a mac, mostly mac pros, they all look the same (pros and air). I also don't carry my air in a bag/case/sleeve, because im cheap and its just another computer, something newer and better will always come out.
So my main choice to buy this air is weight and battery.

What he said.

I get tons of comments from fellow students and profs, and I always praise my 11.6"'s supreme portability and speed. This is my first Mac, and while I'm not an Apple fanboy (though I am a huge fan of Apple/SJ's successful corporate-economic techniques), I simply cannot see ANY other notebook, not even from Apple, rivaling the MacBook Air in terms of benefits for non-art students and profs.

I should reaaaally stop wasting money on frivolous things and start investing in Apple stock.

I thought about dropping a bunch of cash on AAPL stock when their share price was around $70 - thought at the time it was way too risky. :(:(:(:(:(

Hey to break it to you buddy, but I got this for the build, battery, weight, and it had nothing to do with the wow. I drive a beat up car. I don't mind products that look terrible and I imagine getting this a bit scratched frankly. Yes, its good looking, but I got it because I travel, and when you're on an airplane to Europe, you want something to last and not weigh 1000 pounds let alone take up all of your underspaced seat on a 767.

And when I was in Spain it did get attention. Mine's maxed out. Apple didn't install any bells and whistles for that. Why? I like the idea of carrying a lot of movies on a plane with me for my entire trip than a big, bulky power needy external HD.

But yes, when you take practicality away from this thing and its incredible ease of use when travel, and the fact I don't take it out for people to show and I hate the attention it gets because it makes me feel like a target of theft, I suppose you're right, I got this for bragging rights. And it has no useful purpose whatsoever. I proudly keep my Macbook Air to show off the very attractive LG 8300.
