I just purchased an M1 MacBook Air (8-core GPU, 16GB RAM, 1TB SSD), and when I connect to my HP z27 display via Thunderbolt and then route sound output through the monitor (to a Bose Mini II SoundLink on AUX), I get super static-heavy and crackling sound. It's definitely not any of the cables - I still haven't sent my Late 2016 15" MacBook Pro in and it has no issues with the exact same setup. Contacted Apple Support and they said it was likely that I needed an Apple-branded Thunderbolt cable because of compatibility with M1 😂, but to have it checked out at Genius Bar. Genius Bar diagnostics didn't show anything (I had already run diagnostic at home), offered to exchange for me. I said I wanted to try the cable first - no surprise, didn't do anything so I returned it the next day. My husband recently bought an M1 MacBook Air as well, and it has the same problem. Any thoughts on this? Or do I just need to wait for some kind of future update?

Sounds like it could be due to lack of earth connection. If you have an old macbook, you might already have the cable when earth connection, since it used to be included as standard.
