Is the new MBP going to have improved thermals compared to the 2020 MBA? I'm returning the MBA due to the heating issues and am curious if the MBP has been shown to have improved heat flow/thermals. Thanks

I don't think we know about the entry level ones yet other than what we have seen on the testing for the 2019 Models. In the comparisons that I have seen online they have mostly focused on the fact that in the Air, there is no direct air flow/exhaust for the processor like there is on the MacBook Pro. Both have a single fan but the Pro is setup better to use that single fan. On the four port Pro there are two Fans.

AFAIK, it has the same thermal solution as the previous generation, a heat pipe connecting the fan and heatsink. That being said, anything remotely taxing the system will start the fan up, and it get's fairly audible. But I guess that's better than the Air which is thermally constraint with it's heatsink only and case fan. I wonder what performance we could have seen from the 2020 Air had Apple included a heat pipe connecting the fan.

AFAIK, they moved the fan off the heat pipes in the MBA so its not evacuating the heat as efficiently as prior designs. If the MBP follows suit, then it will have heat issues.

Doubtful as the CPU in the 13" MBP TDP is too high for anything less than active cooling, given Apple has changed very little. IMO the update more to do with ridding itself of the embarrassment known as the Butterfly Keyboard.

As for the 2020 Air no hands on. I do have a W10 2in1 UMPC with i7 Y series, it and the recent latest release (10th Gen Intel) are both actively cooled and needs to be, to get the best out of the processors. Boosting past 4GHz you can bet temperatures ramp up rapidly even with active cooling. My UMPC has a low power/silent mode which is rather how I envisage the Air runs, which I would best describe as uninspiring...

All that said Apple has proved over and over that it's all to happy to compromise performance & operating temperatures...
