OK, I go into system preferences>battery>battery and slide the screen timeout from the ridiculous 1 minute to 5 minutes. But the setting is not really changed. Screen times out in 1 minute and if go go back there it shows.... 1 minute, again, as if I had never changed it. There is no save or apply button. What gives? I guess this is another one of those incomprehensible Mac things.
 
Not sure what you mean. I am logged onto the Mac with my admin account, which is the only user account. It does not ask for a password to make the change or after I make the change.
 
Just did it again and it worked. Setting is saved. Maybe I didn't fully close the system preferences window the first times.

if it happens again, start with the Restore Defaults button. If you have a corrupted settings file, that should restore it.
