Hi,
Since day 1, I have used my MBP 13 M1 connected to an LG 27" UN880 Ergo monitor via USB-C (charging)— the second USB-C port is connected to a CalDigit TS3 Plus.

For a few months, the charging cycles have been counting up, although I did not change the battery settings (low power mode = never, slightly dim the display on battery = on, prevent automatic sleeping... = off, wake for network access = never, optimize video streaming while on battery = off, optimized battery charging on).

The MBP has run public beta versions of macos since day 1.
Any advice here to reduce/slow down adding charging cycles?

Cheers
Thomas

Well i guess nothing u can do about as the battery needs to be recharged from time to time to stay healthy.

But why u even think its a problem?
U have 12 cycles in 20 month. This translates into about 140 years till you reach the 1000 cycles your battery is designed for.
You wanna extend that lifetime?

That is normal “charging on hold” behavior.

If you watch the battery icon carefully, you’ll notice it discharges the battery regularly, perhaps once or twice a month to around 50% then back to 100%, and finally staying “on hold” at 70%-80%. It does this to check the health.

i've never really trusted coconut-battery.
This. On the bay there are used Macs always connected to chargers with close to 100% battery health and very few battery cycles that can't last more than 1.5 hours untethered.
I think that use habits don't fit well with the "system Information" stats.

My point is mainly about the changed charging behavior in the last two months, considering what I saw in the first 5-6 months.
The charging from around 80 to 100% happens now more often than between Nov 22 and May 2023.
So, five times 80to100 equals one charging cycle, if I am not wrong.
For my standard use pattern, an iMac or Mac Mini is maybe more suitable.

If you've been running beta macOS, there's been known issues with Sonoma betas that cause intermittent charging.

My experience of using Li-ion batteries is that if they aren't occasionally put under load then the battery will, at least temporarily, lose functional capacity (not the reported mAh number, but the actual time it will last under load). Perhaps it's cycling more often now because of disuse. I switched from a MacBook Pro to Mac mini as my personal computer for this reason. My MacBook's battery performed really poorly after a couple years of very light use away from the charger.

This is entirely normal. For the health of the battery it partially discharges and recharges at specific intervals. Over time these will add up to a few full "charge cycles".

The charging behavior changed when switching to Sonoma beta compared to Ventura.
So, downgrading to Ventura could be an option and waiting for the final version of Sonoma.
