Thats like saying, why spend money on a BMW that you are afraid to drive the crap out of?

So I think it's safe to say that you probably redline your car at every stop light? Or are you afraid to use it?

Exactly.

I have a Jeep Liberty 4x4...but it doesn't mean I drive through the woods on my way to work

Playing some games on a MBP isn't at all the same as redlining a car at every stop, it could probably be compared to accelerating quite quick at some point. I never stated all you should do is play games, but it seems a big waste not to use your product you spent money on.

Because the MBPs aren't meant to be gaming machines. Sorry, but that's the honest truth. I can't rip a DVD without my CPU hitting 100*C, heck I can hardly play Mac Chess and keep my CPU temps under control.

Then your computer is broken. When I play games and fans att full speed I get temps maxing out around 70 celcius (I usually stay at 65), and that is not a big problem. 70 celcius isn't something that will melt your computer. With fans at max 72 celcius is the highest I've gotten even when maxing CPU usage.

It's not just the CPU temps...it's not healthy to have your fans on crank...

...any people wonder why their laptops break

If my laptop breaks I got warranty ;). I see no reason owning a computer for 2 grand and not wanting to use it fully. If I wanted a hassle to change computer when I wanted to game I could just get a cheap PC and get other hassles, I own Apple products because I want to minimize the hassle.

But what about the temperature?

Is it really worth it if you have to crank your fans to 4k RPM and still have your CPU at 80*C+?

You're really killing the life of your laptop

My MPB is 2.5yrs old, and have over 100days played with WoW, and quite some Quake Live played. No issues!
I even run with two screens when gaming, the built in for Ventrilo, Asium and Safari and WoW on the other at 1605x1080 res.

The MBP is constantly at 70-85°C, no issues!
I don't think gaming will kill the newer ones anything more than mine.

The MBP is resilient and they do, at least in my case, have no problems with 3 hrs a days with gaming for almost three years.

Everything below 105 degrees celsius is just fine, which is the maximum temperature of the chip. I think mine always circles around 90 degrees while gaming.

And saying that it wasn't designed for gaming is ********. Then it wasn't designed for video encoding either or other things which put the CPU to 100% for a long time. If you theory would be correct, Apple should really worry about warranty costs because of broken laptops due to overheating, and you don't think they thought these things over, do you?

And not healthy running the fans at max RPM for extended time hah? Why not? What's gonna happen? They suddenly lift off? Seriously...

Look, I couldn't care less what you do with your MB.

However, there are two indisputable facts:

1. Heat kills electronic components
2. Having your fans on crank will kill them overtime

Hmm strange, my 13" plays Borderlands just fine on native resolution, medium/high settings under Windows 7. Same with Call of Duty 2: Modern Warfare (already completed first three missions, very playable). Of course not 60 FPS constantly, rather around 20-35, but still smooth mostly.

Nevertheless, both still suck if you use them primarily for gaming...

Really? Wow, there must be something wrong with something if that is true because that is a huge difference! If my computer really has that kind of power I will be amazed, but I would still suggest a 9600m if you wanted to game. Now to figure out what is wrong with Windows 7...

more indisputable facts:

1. Turning your computer on kills it faster then not turning it on, you better lock it in a safe and never use it!
2. Having a notebook kills it faster then having a desktop due to carrying it around.

So with your logic we should all lock our notebooks in a safe and never use them and buy desktops instead. Everything you do with your computer kills it faster.

Also, gaming isn't hurting the computer as much as web browsing. If I goto a flash page my temp is higher then when I play games, so then again it seems Macs aren't made for web browsing? Or can it be that Macs are made to withstand getting hot and still last at least the 3 years you can get warranty for?

^ yes, that's exactly what I meant. Thanks for clearing it up!

LOL @ saying games are less demanding than Safari/FF. I think you summed up your expertise on the subject matter right there.

Anything below 9000RPMs is great for an S2000. Doesn't mean you should leave it in 2nd gear on the freeway at 8500RPM for an hour.

Yeah, because what says you should stop where you did with hurting the computer? If your only argument is that the computer breaks faster then that argument can be applied to almost everything you do with it.

And you seem to never have used OS X, if you didn't know flash doesn't run very good in OS X, so having a few tabs open with flash intensive pages will use 100% of your CPU, I've yet to find a game that utilizes 100% of your CPU. So if you gotta cut off all flash pages too because they are basically more CPU intensive = more heat = more strain, then you cut off big parts of the web you can visit.
