17" i5 all the way, simply as the 17" is a stunning machine with the hi res screen and I like having the extra USB. It is a niche market and resale wise I have never had problems selling them. I can sell the 15" but it takes a bit of time as there are so many of them.

I have just sold my 15" i5 high res today and am waiting for a 17" i5.

15" easily, apart from because I think the i7 is worth the extra, I have always had the 15" model and find it the BEST size. Perfect portability and screen size. That's personal preference of course though.

the more i think about these are all opinions and none of the machines are so heavy and big that they cant be used. my questions is apple makes 13,15,and 17 what are they trends for notebooks in generally smaller or bigger. with desktop and tv unless there are space limitations bigger is better. i am not sure if thats the case with notebooks anyone?

I would go for the 15" if I were the OP. Since you aren't doing too much high end work or gaming that needs that awesome screen, go for the portability.

I would agree with tim100, there is NO real size difference between the two notebooks, and I regularly shop for 15" bags that my 17" (in a sleeve) has no problem fitting into. It looks big, but it's the same size.

On a side note, I did ask the same question years ago, and got the 15" because everyone mentioned how large the 17" was. Regretted it for a year, then sold and bought a 17" which I still use till this day. NO regrets, and may never buy a 15" notebook for personal or professional use again.

The 17" is like having what the 15" should have been.

Although I feel like the 17" is way too big, I will say that you'd definitely get more bang for your buck with the 17" i5 over the 15" i7. Actually from all I've read, I don't really see why anyone would pick the i7 over the i5. Sure its slightly faster but the decrease in battery life and heat issues don't make it worth it to me.

this review from macworld seems to say that the i7 15 has better battery life than the i5 17. also it does a good job comparing models the buying advice says the 15 i7 preforms better. check it out

I was going back and forth between these two models so much that I bought and cancelled both of them from the Apple Online Store. I ended up with a 17" i7 from my local Apple store that was IN STOCK and only a $155 upgrade from the online price of the 17" i5 when using a government or student discount. Now I have the best of both worlds for $155 more.

Why not get the 17 inch I-7 I don't understand why people spend 2000+ on a computer and worry about the last 200 bucks. There is only 200 dollar difference between a 15 and 17 if they are spec'd the same.

because 3rd party resellers dont care a 17 i7 and the apple store only carrys it inantiglare. some people like to go tothe store to buy their macines

Also I can not be be fussed to wait another 10 days to a CTO.. Besides all I do is browse the web, itunes and iphoto's. So have no tread need for an i7.

Even if the poll was 15" i5 vs 17" i5, the 15" would still win just because of the size. I was going to buy the 15" but decided to go with the 17" because I really missed the screen. It's so nice to have full HD on a notebook. And honestly the 17" isn't that much bigger. Some people blow it out of proportion regarding size.
