Guess it not only feels flimsy, it actually is.
Getting more and more driven away from the TB model the more I think about it.

I'm fine whatever your choice, but a small note here: in my experience it's not flimsy, it's simply very sensitive to dirt.

Flimsy would mean to me that it quickly breaks in pieces. But my keyboard never broke, it feels very sturdy to me. But the sturdiness comes from the extremely small space below the keys. So any crumb from a cookie or a sandwich will clog up the keys, and need compressed air to clean.

That's what I call FAIL ;-)

Having said that - my daughter's MB had its space bar acting up. Brought it to Apple who cleaned it (i.e. what you are saying above) which made it better but it is not 100% ok....and a repair means replacing the entire upper half of the laptop at approx. 350 plus tax. :-(

the biggest disadvantage of the older MBP is probably that in 2-3 years the USB-A will most likely become extinct

We'll see...
General USB-C port uptake could take a LONG LONG time.

having usb-c ports that I will have to integrate into a desktop setup that also needs to work with usb-a/HDMI (for my work computer) sounds expensive and annoying.

It is..
