Another thing I notice is that the color temperature is different.

The rMBP gives a "Warm White" image while the cMBP gives a "Daylight" image.

If that's the reason, Apple would have killed off the Mac Pro by now.

Not updated for 3 years and not even any rumours who's to say they aren't....

Reasonably, the 15" rMBP was a fallback when they discontinued the 17". The Mac Pro really doesn't have that kind of fallback, IMO.

But as already pointed out, you can see how much love and attention they're giving the Mac Pro.

The latest Mac Pro is a flopped. Unlike its predecessor, it is neither very expandable nor very upgradable.

The ones who buy Mac Pros are not the general consumers and are not easily won over by slick-looking form factor.

Got any data to back up that claim?

Its much more expandable than the old one was. I use one as a data server and I use it together with 2x 32TB hardware RAID modules at PCI-e speeds. Good luck getting this expandability with the old MP.

My thought was simply that when they discontinued the 17" MBP, they had another product ready (the 15" rMBP) that people could switch over to (with some pain, in some cases).

I think Apple lets the Mac Pro stick around because there is no other product for people to switch over to, should Apple drop it. IMO, neither an iMac or a mac mini is suitable for most Mac Pro use cases.

With that thought, I think that makes the Mac Pro different from the 17" MBP.

The rMBP 15 is not a replacement for the 17" Macbook pro. Many people here are also upset with losing the 17" Macbook pro.

I have both, and prefer the larger screen of the 17". Mine is a late 2011 2.4 GHZ i7 with 256 SSD. Still working fine.
Apple made a lot of people mad when they dropped the 17" model.

Can't you just calibrate the display? Quick to do and you can have any colour temperature you want.

Dell and HP made 20 inch laptops. I am assuming that they flopped since they were discontinued after release.

I had an 18.4 inch HP DV8T with a 1080p screen and it was brilliant at the time. It needed a better GPU and to lose the cd drive for a bigger battery. Reasonably portable at 5kg. Some days I wish I still had an updated version of it.

You only need to look at the prices of used 17" MacBooks to see how popular they still are even with their one obvious Achilles heel. I sold my 2011 17" MacBook for £700 (6 months ago) and bought a 2012 15" mbpr for £550 (in immaculate condition) and I have to say the 17" was a superior product. It is very disappointing to see such a low resolution on a high end product.

Long live the the 17" MBP with antiglare screen. I still use mine for graphics/video post production. The current 15" model costs waaaaay too much for the smaller screen. I run an SSD in mine. Like the OP I tried the 15" model next to my 17 incher and said forget it. Packed up the 15" and sent it back. The larger screen is oh so easy on my eyes.

I think the reason to drop 17" back then was that there was no powerful hardware to run retina on 17" as that would be too many pixels to handle. I got 15" rMBP in 2012 not out of a desire but necessity as the 17" was dropped.
Was I happy about it? No way. 15" rMBP is not a very good product in my eyes.
Yes, its light and portable. Yes the screen looks beautiful but its still effectively 1440x900 which is a joke (lets be honest here). If you increase the resolution to something higher then you get slight blur and suddenly the retina loses all the purpose.
Fast forward to 2016 we now have the hardware to run 1920x1200 as the old 17" MBP was which was great working resolution for most people (prosumers or professionals). 17" was just the best laptop one could get when needing to work on the road or need something portable from one office to another. 15" brings so many compromises that its just not that very good product for me (and many others).
YES, the majority of people will go for 13 or 15 because majority of people are ok with that. Apple could have 17" as BTO online only and we would all be very happy.
To be honest I sometimes kinda wish that Apple would flop with the iPhone for few years so they go back and treat the computers with the love some people would appreciate. Its great to have amazing iPhone but at the end of the day I do my work on a computer and I would wish for Apple to invest some love there. There is no need to dissect consumers from prosumers or professionals. They can cater all if they wanted. Their line up is a mess but its all on the low side. 11,12,13,15 - so as some suggested - make a compromise Apple - 12, 14, 16. Its still not 17 but it would be a good step.
OR
12, 14, 17 and we are all happy. Its the massive bezel that needs redesign. Physical space will remain almost identical so there is really no excuse there.

release 17" and I'm getting rid off this ******** 15" rMBP and will buy the 17" the moment its out.

Most people here don't care and don't understand but the demand for 17" is still there and will be there. Even if that means low numbers.

So instead of giving us more band options for iWatch give us both. Work and pleasure can come in both :D
