Does anyone know what the actual resolution is for wallpapers minus the top menu bar? Searching on google, everything I can find says 2880x1800 but it still seems a bit small.

The default resolution is 1440x900 (including menu bar), so wallpapers of this resolution work fine on default resolution.

That is correct that is the screen resolution and will give you the best quality wallpapers with no scaling etc needed, ie 1 pixel on the picture corresponds to one pixel on the screen.

Thanks, I found out it's because I scaled the resolution to make things smaller. Do I need a larger res image for better quality now since it's scaled? This is what the center looks like on my screen for a black background at 2880x1800

You need the resolution that you're running the computer at.

If you have it set to "Best for Display" then it's 2880x1800. If you have it set to "Scaled" then you need whatever resolution the computer tells you it looks like.
