I have a 2019 MBP 16" and want to use it with a Dell U3818DW. Ive read a lot of the threads with all the issues, and was wondering has anyone come up with a successful workaround.

1. Can you just plug the MBP into the dell with a cable like THIS USB-C and have the screen display full resolution
2. If I want to be able to keep the laptop closed, and not run into all the associated issues, would a caldigit ts3 plus solve the problems? I could connect the laptop to the ts3 by usb-c and the ts3 to the display via displayport

Anything else I should be considering here with all the reported issues.

The display is only 3840 x 1600 at 60Hz which is less than 4K. There shouldn't be any issues. If there is an issue, a Thunderbolt 3 dock isn't going to fix it.
That USB-C cable appears to be suitable (but then the ports on the display will only be USB 2.0 instead of 3.0 - USB 2.0 is good enough for keyboard/mouse, otherwise you can connect a USB cable to the USB 3.0 upstream port if you want USB 3.0 from the display).

Is there a recommenced best cable to use with this display and the mbp?

I looked at the same monitor so if you end up getting it to work for you I would love to hear about it. When I did my research, similarly to you, all I could see is info on lots of issues and no support from Dell or Apple.
